The Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of its new five-year integrated BSc Computer Science LLB (Hons) program on September 2. The program, launched at the N.R. Madhava Menon Interdisciplinary Center for Research Ethics and Protocol (ICREP), aims to blend the rigorous study of computer science with the complexities of legal education, preparing students to navigate the increasingly digital world of law.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque, the Acting Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court. In his address, Justice Mustaque expressed a strong interest in contributing to the academic environment at Cusat as a visiting faculty member. “Teaching students will give me the opportunity to gain more knowledge,” he remarked, underscoring the reciprocal nature of teaching and learning.
Justice Mustaque also emphasized the importance of ethical reasoning in contemporary law. He highlighted that as citizens of the world’s largest democracy, Indian law students have a pivotal role in shaping the future of legal systems both domestically and globally. His remarks resonated with the overarching mission of the newly inaugurated program, which seeks to equip students with the ethical and legal expertise necessary to address the challenges posed by the digital age.
The inaugural batch of the BSc Computer Science LLB (Hons) program consists of 26 students. The curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive education that integrates computer science with legal studies. Students will undertake 18 compulsory courses in computer science, covering key areas such as programming, data structures, algorithms, and artificial intelligence. The legal component includes 26 courses approved by the Bar Council, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to meet the requirements for legal practice in India. Additionally, the program includes four clinical courses, offering students practical experience in legal procedures and case management.
In line with its interdisciplinary approach, the program also includes two compulsory English courses to enhance students’ communication skills, which are critical in both legal and technological fields. Beyond the compulsory subjects, students have the option to choose from 14 elective courses, allowing them to tailor their education to specific interests. These electives cover a wide range of topics, including Crimes and Criminology, Constitutional Law, Business Law, Law and Agriculture, and Intellectual Property Law.
P.G. Sankaran, Vice-Chancellor of Cusat, presided over the inauguration, expressing his enthusiasm for the program’s potential to produce well-rounded legal professionals equipped with both technical and legal expertise. The integration of computer science with law is particularly timely, given the increasing prevalence of digital issues in legal cases, from cybercrimes to intellectual property disputes.
The BSc Computer Science LLB (Hons) program at Cusat is a pioneering initiative that reflects the university’s commitment to evolving with the times and addressing the educational needs of the 21st century. As technology continues to permeate every aspect of society, the intersection of law and technology becomes increasingly critical. Cusat’s new program aims to prepare its students to be at the forefront of this intersection, shaping the future of legal practice in an increasingly digital world.
The program’s inauguration marks a new chapter in Cusat’s academic offerings, and with the involvement of esteemed legal professionals like Justice Mustaque, it is poised to become a leading choice for students aspiring to excel in both law and technology.
