Tensions escalated dramatically in Lebanon on Sunday night as multiple explosions rocked the capital, Beirut, prompting hundreds of residents to flee their homes. Eyewitnesses reported hearing at least ten blasts and witnessing dense plumes of black smoke rising over the city, particularly from the Chiyah neighborhood in the southern suburbs, where one building was reportedly reduced to rubble. Fortunately, the building was largely abandoned at the time, resulting in no casualties.
The cause of the explosions remains unclear, and there has been no immediate confirmation of injuries or further damage. As panic spread, residents flooded the streets in a frantic attempt to reach perceived safer areas, creating significant traffic congestion across the city.
Israeli Military Actions
In a statement on social media platform X, an Israeli military spokesperson announced that Israel would begin targeting infrastructure associated with Hezbollah’s financial operations, specifically the Al-Qard Al-Hassan Association. This group, identified by the United States as a financial arm of Hezbollah, operates more than 30 branches throughout Lebanon, including 15 in densely populated areas of central Beirut and its suburbs. The Israeli military urged residents to evacuate these locations immediately.
A senior Israeli intelligence official emphasized that the objective of these strikes was not only to disrupt Hezbollah’s economic activities during the ongoing conflict but also to hinder the group’s ability to rebuild and rearm post-conflict. “The purpose of this strike is to target the ability of Hezbollah economic function both during the war but also afterwards to rebuild and to rearm … on the day after,” the official stated.
Escalation of Violence
The recent explosions and military preparations come in the context of heightened hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, which intensified last year when Hezbollah began launching rockets in support of Palestinian militants in Gaza. Just this month, Israel had already commenced ground assaults within Lebanon, a move aimed at stabilizing the border region following rocket attacks on northern Israel.
As the conflict continues, Israel has ramped up its military operations in both Gaza and Lebanon. The Israeli government is reportedly motivated by a desire to secure its borders amid upcoming elections and to prevent its adversaries from regrouping. This military strategy follows the assassination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, which raised hopes for potential ceasefire negotiations.
Casualties and Ongoing Strikes
Earlier on Sunday, Israeli forces targeted Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters and an underground weapons workshop in Beirut, claiming responsibility for the deaths of three Hezbollah commanders during airstrikes. In retaliation, Hezbollah stated that it fired missiles at Israeli positions both in Lebanon and a base in northern Israel.
The escalation in hostilities has resulted in substantial casualties on both sides. An Israeli colonel was reported killed, and another officer injured in combat in northern Gaza. Meanwhile, the health ministry in Gaza reported that an Israeli strike on Beit Lahiya resulted in at least 87 fatalities, one of the highest single-attack death tolls in recent months.
The Human Toll
The ongoing conflict has had devastating consequences for civilians. Israeli military operations in Gaza have reportedly resulted in over 42,500 deaths, displacing most of the territory’s 2.3 million residents, according to Palestinian officials. In Lebanon, more than 2,400 people have been killed, and over 1.2 million displaced since the escalation of violence, highlighting the profound humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
In northern Israel and the occupied Golan Heights, Israeli authorities have reported 59 casualties over the same period. As the situation continues to deteriorate, the prospect for peace remains bleak, with both sides entrenched in their positions as violence spirals further out of control.
The developments in Lebanon and Israel underscore the fragility of the region, as the consequences of military actions reverberate through communities, displacing families and heightening fears for safety in an already volatile environment. As international observers watch closely, the potential for further escalations looms, with civilians caught in the crossfire.
