Tragedy Strikes Kharar: Two Scooterists Die in Separate Road Accidents
Mohali, Oct 24 — In a grim turn of events, two scooterists lost their lives in separate road accidents in Kharar on Wednesday, highlighting the urgent need for improved road safety measures in the region.
The first incident occurred late at night in Khanpur, Kharar, when a scooter driver was fatally struck by a car allegedly driven recklessly. The deceased was identified as Naresh Singla, a local resident. Witness Gagandeep Singh, a video editor from Sector 127, Kharar, recounted the harrowing events leading up to the accident. He and Singla were traveling home on their respective scooters when the tragedy unfolded.
According to Singh, around 10 PM, they approached a pizza shop near Khanpur when a car with a Uttar Pradesh registration number collided with Singla’s scooter. The impact was severe enough to overturn the car, which subsequently crashed into the shutter of a nearby shop. Singh immediately rushed Singla to the Kharar Civil Hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The driver of the car, identified as Bhagat Singh from Haryana, fled the scene following the collision. Law enforcement has since filed charges against him, booking him under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 281 for rash driving and Section 106 for causing death through negligent acts. The police have commenced a manhunt to apprehend Singh.
In a separate incident that unfolded just hours later, a 26-year-old scooterist named Karanvir Singh was tragically killed when a speeding Mahindra Bolero pickup truck struck him near Dau Majra, Kharar. Karanvir, a resident of Mohali, had been visiting a restaurant to meet his uncle and was on his way back home. Witnesses reported that he was waiting for a clear opportunity to cross the road when the pickup collided with him at high speed.
Onlookers rushed Karanvir to the Kharar Civil Hospital, where doctors assessed his critical condition and subsequently referred him to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival at the hospital.
Following the incident, police apprehended the driver of the pickup, Varinder Singh, a resident of Rupnagar. However, he was later released on bail, leading to concerns about accountability and justice in cases involving road accidents. Local authorities are under pressure to ensure that stricter measures are put in place to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
These incidents have sparked outrage among local residents, many of whom have voiced their frustrations over reckless driving and inadequate enforcement of traffic laws. Road safety activists have been calling for increased awareness and stricter penalties for offenders to deter dangerous driving behaviors.
As families mourn the loss of Naresh and Karanvir, the community is left grappling with the harsh reality of road accidents that continue to claim lives. The Kharar police have vowed to intensify their efforts in addressing traffic violations and improving road safety in the area.
In light of these tragic events, local officials are urged to consider implementing more rigorous traffic regulations, enhancing public awareness campaigns, and installing speed cameras and road signs to promote safer driving practices. The loss of lives in Kharar serves as a poignant reminder of the need for collective action to prevent further tragedies on the roads.
