The United Nations has expressed grave concern over the humanitarian catastrophe in North Gaza, describing the situation as “apocalyptic.” The UN and its Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) called for an immediate halt to Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, warning that residents are being denied critical aid and basic necessities under ongoing bombardment.
In an urgent plea shared on social media, the UN emphasized the dire plight of civilians, especially women and children, and condemned the ongoing restrictions on humanitarian access. According to the IASC, Gaza’s hospitals face extreme shortages, unable to procure essential supplies due to the blockades and attacks that have severely hampered life-saving services. Health facilities report escalating casualties, with patients and staff killed or detained amid fighting in and around hospital grounds.
The IASC stated that civilians in Gaza are at heightened risk from disease, famine, and violence, exacerbated by restricted aid access and the delay of crucial vaccination campaigns, including polio immunization for children. Essential goods, such as food, water, and medical supplies, remain scarce as relief efforts struggle against security challenges.
Calling on all parties to comply with international humanitarian law, the UN demanded unimpeded access for humanitarian assistance and the immediate cessation of attacks on civilians and infrastructure. It further urged that detained Palestinians be released, and called on Hamas to release hostages, underlining the need for all combatants to uphold international norms.
The UN and IASC reiterated that continued arms transfers into the conflict zones, with the risk of violating humanitarian principles, should be reassessed by member states.
