Manav Kaul: “I Owe My Life to Mumbai and This Film Industry”
Manav Kaul, the versatile actor, playwright, author, and theatre director, continues to mesmerize audiences with his poignant performances and engaging narratives. At the recently concluded Prithvi Theatre Festival, he unveiled his latest play, Pyaar Aadmi Ko Kabootar Bana Deta Hai, a musical adaptation of his short story. Known for his emotionally rich portrayals in projects like Ajeeb Daastaans, The Fame Game, and Go Noni Go, Manav has earned admiration for his ability to delve into the complexities of love and life.
In a recent conversation, Manav discussed his journey in the entertainment industry, his creative process, and his deep gratitude toward Mumbai and the film industry that shaped his life.
Exploring Love on Stage and Screen
Manav’s work consistently revolves around love, offering audiences unique perspectives on the subject. He attributes this to his personal life, saying, “Being single allows me to view love from different perspectives and portray it in unique ways. Each project—be it theatre, films, or OTT—brings its own flavor of love. These roles are very close to my heart.”
Despite portraying intense, romantic characters on-screen, Manav remains single. When asked about his relationship status, he quipped, “I haven’t been lucky enough to find the right girl. Someday, I’ll find someone.”
The Impact of OTT Platforms on His Career
Manav credits OTT platforms for transforming the acting landscape, both for himself and the larger acting community. “OTT platforms have opened up amazing opportunities for actors. Unlike traditional films, where the focus is often limited to the hero-heroine dynamics, web series provide richer arcs for every character,” he shared.
Manav also praised the inclusivity of the medium, which allows talented actors—previously restricted to minor roles in films—to shine. “It’s deeply satisfying to be part of this evolution, and I believe it has elevated the quality of storytelling.”
Balancing Theatre, Films, and OTT
Juggling multiple creative pursuits is no small feat, but Manav approaches it with a clear focus. “I concentrate on one thing at a time. When I’m directing a play, I turn down other projects. Once that’s done, I shift my energy to films or OTT,” he explained.
For Manav, the variety in his work enriches his artistry. “When I direct a play and then act in a film, I feel like a much better actor. The change in mediums keeps me engaged and ensures I give my best to every project.”
Mumbai: The City of Dreams
Manav’s journey from a small village in Kashmir to becoming a celebrated artist in Mumbai is nothing short of inspirational. He cherishes the opportunities the city and the film industry have offered him. “Arre mere gaon mein maine ek sapna dekha tha ki main Mumbai aaonga, yeh Mumbai ka problem thodi hai? I’ve got everything from this industry!” he said passionately.
Manav credits Mumbai with shaping his perspective and career. “The industry has given me exposure, learning, and opportunities. I owe my life to Mumbai and this film industry. I love everything about it.”
The Evolution of an Actor
Reflecting on his early years, Manav candidly admitted to struggling with acting initially. “I was terrible in the beginning,” he confessed. This led him to quit acting for 12 years before rediscovering his passion with Kai Po Che! (2013). “From that point, I realized, ‘Oh, I love acting. I should do it more.’”
A Musical Journey with Kabootars
Manav’s latest play, Pyaar Aadmi Ko Kabootar Bana Deta Hai, debuted at the Prithvi Theatre Festival to much acclaim. Adapted from his short story Prem Kabootar, the musical tells the story of a boy from a small town who pens love letters for his friends, discovering his passion for storytelling along the way.
“It’s about the transformative power of love and creativity,” Manav explained. With eight characters and months of rehearsal, the play is one of the most enjoyable projects he’s worked on. “Writing for the stage is different—you’re not just telling a story; you’re creating a whole world for the audience.”
Manav Kaul’s journey is a testament to his resilience, creativity, and love for storytelling. Whether on stage, screen, or paper, he continues to captivate audiences with his dedication to exploring the human experience. As he aptly puts it, “Life as an artist is fulfilling when you embrace multitasking.”
