Egyptian Model Logina Salah Makes History at Miss Universe
Logina Salah, an Egyptian model with vitiligo, has made history by becoming the first contestant from Egypt to reach the top 30 in the prestigious Miss Universe beauty pageant. Her remarkable achievement has not only highlighted Egypt’s place in the global pageantry arena but also broken stereotypes surrounding beauty standards.
A Historic Milestone for Egypt
The 34-year-old model from Alexandria etched her name into the history books at the 73rd Miss Universe competition, held in Mexico on Sunday. Representing Egypt, Salah stood out among contestants from around the world, making it to the semi-finals and bringing her nation into the spotlight.
On stage, Salah dazzled in multiple outfits, including a striking Cleopatra-inspired costume. The ensemble symbolised the “comeback of Egypt’s powerful legacy of leadership,” as she described it. Another standout was a cape adorned with hand-painted images of the pyramids, the Sphinx, and hieroglyphics, showcasing Egypt’s rich heritage.
Taking to Instagram to celebrate her success, Salah wrote, “We made history. I am beyond thrilled and incredibly proud to see Egypt make it to the semi-finals of Miss Universe! This is the result of unwavering dedication, hard work, and a mindset that always strives for greatness.” She added, “We’ve put Egypt back on the pageantry map, and this is just the beginning.”
Advocating for Inclusivity
Salah’s journey to the Miss Universe stage is not just a win for Egypt but also a significant step forward for inclusivity in the beauty industry. Salah has vitiligo, a skin condition characterised by loss of pigmentation, and she has used her platform to challenge societal beauty norms and advocate for self-acceptance.
“For many years, I used to think of my patches (vitiligo) as a source of embarrassment and shame,” Salah shared on Instagram. “Today’s dress is inspired by how I celebrate my patches every day. I see them as colourful and unique, like the patches on this dress. The uneven patches represent how I view myself and my skin as imperfectly perfect.”
Through her participation, Salah has paved the way for greater representation of individuals with skin conditions in modelling and beauty competitions, encouraging others to embrace their uniqueness.
A Rising Star in the Fashion World
Salah’s rise to prominence has been swift. Based in Dubai and a mother of one, she made her runway debut at Dubai Fashion Week in 2023. Her talent and determination quickly earned her recognition, culminating in her historic performance at Miss Universe.
Middle Eastern Representation at Miss Universe
This year’s Miss Universe competition also saw debutants from other Middle Eastern countries, including Iran and the United Arab Emirates. Contestants from Bahrain and Lebanon further strengthened the region’s presence, highlighting its growing influence in the global pageant scene.
Salah’s accomplishment is particularly significant as it signals a shift in the narrative of beauty pageants, which are increasingly becoming platforms to celebrate diversity, cultural heritage, and personal stories.
A New Era for Egyptian Pageantry
Logina Salah’s achievement is more than just a personal victory—it is a milestone for Egypt. By reaching the top 30, she has elevated the nation’s status in the world of beauty pageants and inspired countless individuals to believe in their dreams.
In her words, “This is just the beginning.” With her unwavering dedication and advocacy for inclusivity, Salah is not just making history—she is shaping the future of pageantry and redefining global beauty standards.
