On the foundation day of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday, party leader Arvind Kejriwal reiterated his commitment to the fight for democracy and the Constitution, emphasising that the party’s strength comes from its honesty and unwavering connection with the people.
Addressing an event at the AAP headquarters, Kejriwal, who is also the national convenor of the party, spoke of the party’s growth, attributing it to its dedication to the common man and its transparent approach to governance. He pointed out the coincidence of the AAP’s foundation day falling on Constitution Day, calling it a symbolic moment. “It cannot be a coincidence that our party was born on Constitution Day. God knew the Constitution was going to be in danger,” Kejriwal remarked, referring to the challenges facing India’s democratic framework.
The AAP, he claimed, had brought forward an “honest model of governance,” focused on providing basic amenities such as education and healthcare while simultaneously working to improve Delhi’s infrastructure. Kejriwal took pride in the party’s achievements, noting that AAP had been able to deliver practical results for the people of Delhi, setting a standard for good governance in the country.
He also took a jab at opposition parties, particularly criticising the “hypocrisy” of some leaders who, according to him, engage in “Jhuggi tourism.” “Some leaders come to slums for show but later send bulldozers to destroy the homes there,” Kejriwal charged, urging the people to be cautious of such deceitful tactics.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi also addressed the event, echoing Kejriwal’s sentiments and highlighting the importance of “development-oriented” politics. She proudly referred to the success of the Delhi government’s initiatives, particularly in the education sector, as proof of AAP’s commitment to progress. “Our party showed in 2020 that elections can be won based on development work and honest governance,” she said, pointing to the transformation of Delhi’s government schools as a prime example of the party’s success.
Atishi also noted the significant turnaround in the state of government schools in Delhi. “Before 2015, there was talk of shutting down government schools. Today, our work has inspired states across India to improve their education systems. This is the Delhi model,” she added, emphasising that AAP’s approach to governance was a benchmark for others.
Earlier in the day, Kejriwal took to X (formerly Twitter) to reflect on the AAP’s 12-year journey. He expressed gratitude for the support of the people, stating, “The common man found its strength with the founding of AAP. The journey so far was filled with struggles, sacrifices, and victories.” Kejriwal highlighted that despite numerous attempts to undermine the party over the past year, its core values of honesty, people-centric policies, and the morale of its workers had only made it stronger. “In the last year, lakhs of attempts were made to finish us, but our honesty, love of the people, and morale of the workers made us stronger. We stand stronger than before against injustice and dictatorship,” he wrote, reaffirming that the party’s battle to protect the Constitution and democracy would continue.
Kejriwal’s message resonated with AAP’s leaders, who have emphasised the importance of grassroots development as the party aims for a third consecutive term in the upcoming 2025 Delhi Assembly elections. The party had won a resounding victory in the 2020 polls, securing 62 out of 70 Assembly seats, a clear indication of its popularity in the national capital.
As the party looks ahead, Kejriwal has called on all AAP leaders and workers to commit themselves to the betterment of the country, pledging to continue their fight for the common people and for the democratic values that define India. The AAP, with its focus on honesty, transparency, and development, intends to build on its successes in Delhi and extend its influence in other parts of the country, with its eyes firmly set on the future.
In conclusion, the AAP Foundation Day served as both a celebration of past achievements and a reaffirmation of the party’s resolve to protect and uphold the values of democracy, equality, and good governance in India.
