A masked thief has been caught on CCTV entering the home of an elderly dementia sufferer in Chorlton, south Manchester, where he reportedly stole her handbag as she slept.
The incident occurred at 5am on Sunday, December 8, when the suspect, dressed in dark clothing and wearing a black face mask, was seen on camera inside the woman’s living room. The intruder is believed to have snatched the pink handbag, which contained personal belongings, before fleeing the scene.
Police have released footage showing the suspect, who was wearing dark blue jeans, gloves, a dark jacket, and a grey baseball cap. He carried a backpack as he prowled around the flat. The chilling images show him leaning over the sofa, where the handbag was left, before making off with it.
The Greater Manchester Police (GMP) City of Manchester South Neighbourhood Crime Team is urgently appealing for witnesses or anyone who recognises the man to come forward.
Sergeant Kevin Thomas, leading the investigation, condemned the opportunistic burglary, stating:
“A vulnerable elderly lady has had her belongings taken while she slept in her own home. An opportunist took advantage of her vulnerability and entered her property, where she should be safe and secure, and her family should feel assured that she is.”
The sergeant emphasised the gravity of the crime, adding:
“The suspect has been captured on a camera installed within the living room of the flat. We are urging anyone who thinks they know who the man pictured is, or who may have seen something suspicious at around 5am on Sunday morning, to get in touch with us.”
Neighbours in the Chorlton area expressed shock and anger at the brazen act. One neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said:
“It’s disgusting that someone would target an elderly woman like this. She’s lived here for years and is a sweet lady. The thought of someone sneaking into her home while she was sleeping is terrifying.”
Another resident added:
“People in this community look out for each other, especially the elderly. We’ll do everything we can to support the investigation and help catch this person.”
The victim’s family is understandably distressed by the incident. They have chosen not to comment publicly but are cooperating fully with the authorities.
Sergeant Thomas urged the public to come forward with any information that could help identify the thief. Anyone who recognises the man in the CCTV footage or who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area during the early hours of December 8 is encouraged to contact GMP.
Members of the public can report information by calling police on 101, quoting log number 3006 of 08/12/24. Alternatively, they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
The crime has reignited discussions about the safety of vulnerable members of society. Local councillor Mary Edwards commented on the need for increased support and security measures for elderly residents, saying:
“It’s deeply saddening to hear about this incident. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home. We need to prioritise support for our vulnerable residents and ensure they have access to resources that can help protect them from such appalling acts.”
While police continue their investigation, the community is rallying around the victim, offering her support and reassurance. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need for continued efforts to safeguard those most at risk in society.
As the search for the suspect intensifies, authorities hope the public’s assistance will lead to his swift identification and apprehension.
