Europe’s strongest militaries have been ranked in a new report by Global Firepower for 2024, and it’s excellent news for Britain. According to the data, the United Kingdom has claimed the title of the strongest army in Europe, while also ranking sixth in the world.
The rankings assess each nation’s military capabilities across a range of factors, including personnel numbers, equipment, and overall defence spending. Here’s a detailed look at the findings, including how Britain secured its top spot and where other nations stand.
1. United Kingdom
The UK’s armed forces lead the European rankings thanks to their robust capabilities across land, sea, and air. Defence spending accounted for 2.2% of the nation’s £2.4 trillion GDP in 2021, highlighting the government’s commitment to maintaining military strength.
The Royal Air Force (RAF) operates 664 aircraft, 18% of which are classified as fighters. Meanwhile, the Royal Navy boasts 117 naval assets, including 11 frigates, 10 submarines, and 26 patrol vessels. On land, the UK’s army is equipped with 213 tanks, 71 self-propelled artillery units, and 126 towed artillery pieces.
This well-rounded combination of assets and strategic investment has secured the UK’s dominance in Europe and a strong global ranking.
2. Italy
Italy takes second place in Europe and ranks 14th globally. A key factor behind Italy’s high position is its large number of active personnel, with over 50% of its military staff in active service in 2024.
