Disney+ announces feature documentary about Caroline Flack’s tragic life
Disney+ is set to delve into the poignant story of Caroline Flack, the beloved former presenter of love island, who tragically took her own life in 2020. Titled Caroline (working title), the documentary promises an intimate exploration of Flack’s final months and the questions that continue to linger about her untimely death.
Produced by Curious films, the same production company that created the 2021 channel 4 documentary Caroline Flack: Her life and death, this new feature-length project takes a fresh approach. It centres on Christine Flack, Caroline’s mother, as she embarks on a deeply personal journey to uncover the circumstances that led to her daughter’s death.
A mother’s quest for answers
Christine Flack shared her motivation for participating in the documentary, stating:
“I still have so many questions about what happened to Caroline in her final months, and it’s something I feel deeply compelled to explore, even though I know it will be challenging. I’m pleased to be working with the team at Curious Films once again, in the hope of bringing clarity and understanding to Carrie’s story – not just for her, but for everyone who cared about her.”
The film will feature heartfelt, first-hand accounts from Flack’s family, close friends, and colleagues. By weaving these testimonies with an exploration of the relentless media scrutiny Flack faced, the documentary aims to shed light on the pressures endured by on-screen talent in the UK’s entertainment industry.
A beloved presenter and a harsh spotlight
Caroline Flack rose to fame as a vibrant and charismatic presenter, hosting popular shows like The X Factor, Big Brother’s Big Mouth, and The Brit Awards. However, it was her time as the host of Love Island that cemented her place as a household name.
In the months leading up to her death, Flack faced immense public and personal challenges. She had stepped down from her role on love island after being charged with assaulting her boyfriend, an incident that dominated tabloid headlines and social media commentary. Her death at the age of 40 shocked the nation, sparking a wider conversation about the role of the press and the treatment of public figures.
Disney+ tackles another major UK story
The announcement of Caroline comes as part of Disney+’s continued commitment to creating compelling UK-based documentaries. Previous projects include an in-depth exploration of the Wagatha Christie scandal and Spencer Matthews’ emotional search for his brother’s body on Mount Everest.
Sean Doyle, Executive Director of unscripted at Disney+, commissioned the project, with Gaby Aung, Senior Manager for Unscripted, serving as executive producer. The documentary will be directed by Christian Collerton and produced by Sophie Clayton-Payne, with Dov Freedman, Charlie Russell, and Jessie Versluys serving as executive producers for Curious Films.
A legacy remembered
Caroline Flack’s death not only left an unfillable void in the world of British television but also became a rallying point for mental health advocacy and media reform. The upcoming documentary seeks to honour her legacy by offering a nuanced and compassionate account of her life, while encouraging important discussions about mental health, media ethics, and societal pressures.
Caroline (working title) is set to join Disney+’s growing roster of powerful, thought-provoking documentaries. Through this feature, the platform aims to provide an unfiltered lens into the life of a woman whose story continues to resonate deeply with audiences worldwide.
With Christine Flack’s determination to uncover the truth and the expertise of Curious Films, this documentary promises to be a moving tribute to Caroline Flack’s life and a reflection on the enduring impact of her untimely passing.
