Ex-UK labour MP arrested in pedophile sting months after party suspension

A former UK Labour MP has been arrested in a high-profile pedophile sting operation, months after his suspension from the party amid serious allegations. Ivor Caplin, who served as the MP for Hove from 1997 to 2005, was detained by police in a covert operation aimed at exposing child exploitation and sexual communication with minors.

The arrest, which took place in Sussex, has sent shockwaves through the political community. Video footage, which has since gone viral on social media, appears to show a man identifying himself as Caplin being handcuffed by law enforcement officers. The individual in the video, dressed in a black trench coat and red cap, is seen being escorted away by police, with his hands secured behind his back.

Sussex Police have confirmed the arrest of a 66-year-old man on suspicion of engaging in sexual communication with a child, though they have not named him directly. Caplin’s identity, however, has been widely reported by UK media outlets, who have linked the incident to the former MP’s prior political career.

Caplin’s arrest follows his suspension from the Labour Party in May 2024. The suspension, which came after serious but undisclosed allegations surfaced, led to his expulsion from the party, though he has consistently denied all charges. In a statement issued at the time, Labour officials confirmed the suspension but declined to provide specific details regarding the nature of the allegations. “Due to the sensitivity of the matter, we will not be commenting further at this stage,” the statement read.

The allegations that led to Caplin’s suspension had caused a stir in political circles, but this latest arrest has drawn even more attention. Caplin’s involvement in a sting operation aimed at exposing child exploitation has raised further questions about his actions and his connections to the alleged incidents.

During his time in office, Caplin held several prominent roles within the Labour Party. He was appointed assistant government whip in 2001, before being elevated to the position of junior defence minister and, later, Minister for Veterans at the Ministry of Defence. His tenure was marked by significant involvement in military and veterans’ affairs, and he was considered an influential figure within the party during his years in parliament.

Since his departure from parliament in 2005, Caplin has kept a relatively low profile in the public eye. However, his name resurfaced in the political sphere following the allegations in May 2024, which led to his suspension from the Labour Party. He has denied all allegations, and his legal team has maintained his innocence, stressing that Caplin has not been convicted of any crime related to these accusations.

The latest developments have prompted widespread criticism from both within and outside the political establishment. Members of the Labour Party, many of whom worked with Caplin during his tenure, have expressed shock and disappointment over the arrest. One former Labour colleague, speaking anonymously, stated, “This is a deeply distressing and troubling development. Ivor was a well-regarded colleague in his time, but these allegations are serious, and it’s only right that the authorities investigate them thoroughly.”

Caplin’s arrest comes at a time when concerns about child exploitation and online abuse are at the forefront of national discourse. The UK government has been under increasing pressure to address the growing problem of online grooming and sexual communication with minors. The police operation that led to Caplin’s arrest is part of a wider crackdown on such criminal activities, with law enforcement agencies working with charities and advocacy groups to identify and prosecute those involved in the abuse of children.

Caplin’s arrest has also sparked debate about the responsibilities of political parties in handling allegations of criminal behaviour. Critics have pointed to the Labour Party’s initial response to Caplin’s suspension as insufficient, with calls for greater transparency and a more rigorous process for dealing with such serious accusations in the future.

As the investigation into Caplin continues, questions remain about the full extent of the allegations against him and what consequences he may face if found guilty. While Caplin has denied all charges, the shocking nature of his arrest in connection with a child exploitation sting has made headlines, leaving the public and his former colleagues grappling with the unsettling revelations surrounding the ex-MP.

In the meantime, Caplin remains in police custody as the investigation unfolds, with many awaiting further details about the case. The case highlights the ongoing challenges that authorities face in tackling child exploitation and ensuring that justice is served for the victims involved.
