Hollywood legend Goldie Hawn left viewers stunned during the 2025 Academy Awards after revealing an unexpected health struggle live on stage.
The 79-year-old actress was presenting the award for Best Animated Feature alongside Andrew Garfield when she paused mid-speech, struggling to read the teleprompter.
“I’m completely blind. I mean, i am!” – Hawn’s on-stage confession
Dressed in a shimmering gold gown, Hawn began her speech with her trademark warmth and humour, saying:
“I was so lucky to make movies… and making people laugh.”
However, she suddenly hesitated, squinting at the screen before turning to Garfield for help.
“OK. Sweetheart, can you read that? I can’t read that.”
Garfield immediately leaned in, concerned, before Hawn made a startling admission.
“I’m completely blind. I mean, I am!” she exclaimed, before revealing the cause: “Cataracts.”
Garfield remained composed, gently reassuring her:
“OK, I’ve got you,” before seamlessly picking up the script and continuing the presentation.
Understanding cataracts – The condition behind Hawn’s struggle
Cataracts occur when the eye’s lens becomes cloudy, often leading to blurry or foggy vision. The condition develops gradually but can significantly impact daily tasks, such as reading, recognising faces, or driving at night.
While cataracts are common in ageing, they can be treated with a simple and highly effective surgery to restore clear vision.
Despite the unexpected on-stage moment, Hawn remained composed, even laughing at herself, which was met with warm applause from the audience.
A touching tribute from Andrew Garfield
As the pair prepared to announce the winner, Garfield took a moment to express his admiration for Hawn, delivering one of the most heartfelt moments of the night.
“Can I tell you something?” he asked before turning to her.
“There’s someone, there’s a person who gave my mother during her life the most joy, the most comfort, and tonight, I feel very lucky, because I get to thank that person from the bottom of my heart.”
Holding Hawn’s hand, he continued:
“You’ve given us movies full of joy. You’ve lifted our spirits and made us feel like all was right with the world, over and over again.”
Hawn, visibly moved, held back tears as she whispered:
“Thank you so much, that really touches me.”
She then added with a chuckle:
“I was so lucky to make movies… and making people laugh. And maybe some didn’t, but that’s OK.”
The crowd erupted into cheers and applause, with many in attendance wiping away tears at the heartfelt exchange.

Beyond Hawn’s emotional moment, the 2025 Academy Awards saw independent film Anora sweep the night, taking home:

The film tells the compelling story of a sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, exploring identity, resilience, and self-discovery.
