Detectives say the child’s mother may needmedical assistance and urge her to come forward
A police investigation has been launched after the body of a newborn baby was found in a bag near a bin outside a church in west London.
Officers were called to All Saints’ Church on Talbot Road, Notting Hill, following reports of the harrowing discovery. Emergency services, including the London Ambulance Service, attended the scene, but tragically, the infant was declared dead at around 12:46 pm on Tuesday.
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that officers remain in the area as urgent enquiries are ongoing to locate the baby’s mother, who may require immediate medical attention. At this stage, authorities have yet to establish the child’s gender or exact age.
Shocking discovery by local bin collector
Neighbours in the area have shared their shock and sorrow following the tragic discovery. One resident, who spoke anonymously, said they were told the baby was found by a binman clearing leaves.
“I was told a binman who was sweeping up leaves and putting them in the bin found the body next to it,” the neighbour said.
“The guy picked up the plastic bag near the bin and realised it was too heavy. It’s horrible. But you don’t know what situation the mother was in.”
A police cordon has since been established around the church, with forensic officers working at the scene. A blue police tent has been erected near the location where the baby was found, and officers are guarding a taped-off area restricting access from Clydesdale Road, Colville Gardens, and Powys Square.
Appeal to find the baby’s mother
Superintendent Owen Renowden of the Metropolitan Police expressed deep concern over the distressing incident.
“This is an extremely sad and shocking matter, and officers are working hard to establish the circumstances around what has taken place,” he said.
“This investigation is in the early stages, and our immediate priority is to locate the baby’s mother, who we believe may have very recently given birth.
“If you are the baby’s mother and are reading this, please come forward to police or medical professionals.
“You must feel very frightened, but please let us help – we are really worried about you, and it is vitally important you get medical assistance and support.
“You can walk into any hospital or police station, and we will ensure you receive the care you need.”
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to understand the events leading to the baby’s death.
Community in shock
Local residents and officials have expressed their sadness and concern over the incident.
Kensington and Bayswater MP Joe Powell said:
“I know residents will be feeling deeply shocked and saddened about the incident on Talbot Road that took place earlier today.
“I have spoken with the police, and they have my full support as they work to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic situation.
“I encourage anyone with information to contact the police.”
Police investigation continues
The Metropolitan Police have asked for the public’s assistance in their investigation. Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area or who has any information about the baby’s mother is urged to contact the police immediately.
Those with information can call 101, quoting reference CAD 3431/25March, or remain anonymous by contacting Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
As officers continue their inquiries, the focus remains on finding the baby’s mother and ensuring she receives the necessary medical and emotional support.
