YouTube Music is preparing to launch a much-anticipated feature that will allow users to share song lyrics, much like Spotify’s existing tool. According to a report by 9To5Google, this new functionality is gradually rolling out on the Android version of the app and is expected to become widely available in the coming weeks.
The update brings a more interactive and social element to the YouTube Music experience. Users will soon be able to select specific lines of lyrics from a song, then share them with a stylish, customisable background. The feature enables easy sharing to various third-party platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram Stories, and X (formerly Twitter), among others.
How it works
The process is designed to be intuitive. While viewing lyrics on a song’s page, users will notice a new pill-shaped “Share” button located at the bottom of the lyrics screen. Tapping this button brings up a new interface where listeners can highlight the exact portion of lyrics they want to share.
After selecting the desired lyrics, users can press “Next” to continue to the customisation screen. Here, a colour carousel will allow them to personalise the background of the lyrics card. The final design will include the album artwork, song title, and artist’s name at the top, along with the YouTube Music logo at the bottom for branding. Once satisfied with the look, users can either save the image to their device or instantly share it through various supported apps.
This feature is strikingly similar to what Spotify introduced in 2021, where users can share snippets of lyrics from their favourite songs with backgrounds tailored to their tastes. While YouTube Music has long trailed Spotify in social features, this update brings it a step closer in functionality and user engagement.
Additional audio enhancement: ‘consistent volume’
Alongside the lyrics sharing update, YouTube Music is also introducing a ‘consistent volume’ setting, available on both Android and iOS. The feature aims to provide a smoother listening experience by reducing fluctuations in volume between different tracks or when switching between audio and music video formats.
The ‘consistent volume’ toggle works in a similar manner to YouTube’s existing ‘Stable volume’ control, which balances audio levels during standard video playback. With this addition, users can expect fewer sudden jumps or dips in volume — a common grievance when streaming mixed content.
The setting is expected to be found under the playback or audio settings menu once it becomes fully rolled out. This enhancement is likely to appeal particularly to those who use headphones or Bluetooth speakers, where uneven audio levels can be more jarring.
A strategic push for more engagement
These latest additions underscore YouTube Music’s ongoing efforts to close the gap with its competitors and provide a more polished, user-friendly service. With personalised playlists, podcast integration, and now social media-ready lyric sharing, YouTube Music appears to be steadily enhancing its offering.
While the platform remains popular among those who enjoy its seamless switch between audio and video, it has often lagged behind rivals like Spotify and Apple Music when it comes to user-centric features. With this new update, YouTube Music signals that it’s ready to compete more fiercely in the ever-evolving music streaming market.
Though currently limited to Android devices, it is expected that the lyrics sharing feature will eventually make its way to iOS users as well.
Whether it’s for sharing a favourite line from a beloved song or ensuring a consistent audio experience across tracks, these new features promise to make the YouTube Music experience more personal, expressive, and enjoyable.
