In a vibrant display of India’s cultural diversity, the Government of India launched a week-long festival, Bharat Parv, on the Rajpath lawns near India Gate to mark the 70th Independence Day celebrations. The festival aimed to highlight the nation’s unity in diversity, celebrating the rich heritage, art, and traditions from all corners of India.
The event was flagged off by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, while Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, M. Venkaiah Naidu, presided over the inauguration. In his speech, Naidu emphasized the importance of fostering a sense of national pride and cultural understanding among the youth. “We have to constantly project ourselves for the future generation so that they understand and follow the same,” he said.
Northeast India takes center stage
One of the standout features of Bharat Parv was the prominent participation of the northeastern states. The event provided a platform for these states to showcase their unique art, crafts, and culinary traditions, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich and diverse culture of the region. From traditional attire to exotic food stalls, the Northeast’s presence was a major attraction at the festival.
A vendor from Nagaland, representing the popular restaurant ‘Nagaland’s Kitchen’ based in Green Park, New Delhi, shared insights into the region’s cuisine. “We have special items like bamboo shoot pickle and Naga King Chilli, plus pork gravy with bamboo shoot is the most sought-after dish,” he said. The vendor invited festival-goers to visit the restaurant, where live bands perform on Saturday nights, creating a cultural hotspot for food and music enthusiasts alike.
A visitor from the Northeast expressed pride in the display of regional culture and the unity symbolized by the event. “It doesn’t matter which caste we belong to or which state we are from; when we see our tricolour flag, it fills us with pride. I hope all Indians feel this pride and energy,” he said, underscoring the spirit of national unity that the festival evoked.
A true cultural extravaganza
The festival was a kaleidoscope of cultural performances, with states from across the country contributing to the celebration. Folk dances, traditional music, and artistic displays were featured, drawing large crowds and ensuring the participation of people from all walks of life. From the vibrant colors of Rajasthan’s folk performances to the rhythmic beats of Kerala’s traditional drumming, every state brought its own distinct flavor to the celebration.
Bharat Parv not only served as a platform for showcasing India’s cultural richness but also as a symbol of inclusiveness and equality. Events like this foster a sense of national pride and unity, bringing people from diverse backgrounds together in celebration of the nation’s shared heritage.
Such festivals, with their emphasis on cultural exchange and mutual respect, play a crucial role in reinforcing the fabric of India’s pluralistic society. By embracing the diversity that defines the country, Bharat Parv stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of oneness that unites the nation.
