Turkey and Pakistan to establish joint factory for KAAN fighter jet production

Turkey and Pakistan are set to embark on a significant collaboration, as the two countries have reportedly finalised plans to establish a joint factory for the production of Turkey’s new KAAN fighter jet. The announcement of this partnership follows months of discussions and is expected to greatly enhance both nations’ defence and military capabilities.

According to multiple Turkish and Pakistani news outlets, representatives from 32 institutions convened earlier this month at the 8th meeting of the Pak-Turkish Industrial Expo in Pakistan, where they finalised the details of the agreement. The talks confirmed that Pakistan would play an official role in the development and production of the KAAN fighter jet, a major step in strengthening the defence ties between the two countries.

Details of the joint factory agreement

At the meeting, Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler revealed that the agreement to establish a joint factory was close to completion, almost a year and a half after he initially announced that Turkey and Pakistan would cooperate on the KAAN jet project. The factory will be operated jointly by Turkish and Pakistani counterparts, with the primary goal of manufacturing the KAAN fighter jet in large quantities.

The fifth-generation KAAN jet, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), is designed to replace Turkey’s ageing fleet of F-16 fighter jets, bolstering the country’s aerial defence capabilities. The aircraft is set to feature advanced stealth technology, superior manoeuvrability, and the ability to conduct multiple combat missions. This new partnership with Pakistan aims to not only advance Turkey’s military capabilities but also reduce production costs and facilitate the expansion of exports to other countries.

Strategic defence cooperation

This agreement marks a key milestone in the burgeoning defence cooperation between Turkey and Pakistan, which has been steadily growing over recent years. By collaborating on the KAAN fighter jet project, both countries stand to benefit immensely. For Turkey, the partnership provides an opportunity to increase the production capacity of the KAAN jet while maintaining lower costs. For Pakistan, it offers the chance to bolster its own aerial defence capabilities, while also enhancing its engineering skills within the domestic aerospace industry.

Pakistan’s involvement in the KAAN project is seen as a major step towards upgrading its military hardware, particularly as the country continues to modernise its armed forces. The joint factory will help Pakistan develop its own manufacturing capabilities, which could lead to the creation of more advanced aircraft and other military technologies in the future.

The KAAN fighter jet: A leap forward for Turkish defence

Developed by TAI, the KAAN is a highly advanced, fifth-generation stealth fighter that is set to compete with other contemporary fighter jets in terms of both capability and performance. It is designed to perform a wide array of missions, including air-to-air combat, ground-attack roles, and surveillance. The KAAN is expected to provide Turkey with a significant boost in terms of both military strength and technological innovation.

Turkey’s decision to develop the KAAN fighter jet follows its exclusion from the US-led F-35 fighter jet program in 2019. The decision to cut Turkey out of the program was based on the country’s purchase of Russia’s S-400 missile defence system, which caused tensions between Turkey and the United States. As a result, Turkey decided to accelerate its own efforts to develop an indigenous fighter jet, leading to the creation of the KAAN.

The joint production of the KAAN with Pakistan represents a further step in Turkey’s broader strategy of reducing its dependency on foreign military technology. By partnering with Pakistan, Turkey can ensure that the production of the fighter jet remains under its control, while also expanding its presence in the global arms market.

Impact on Pakistan’s defence and technology sector

For Pakistan, the joint factory deal is expected to have long-term benefits, both militarily and economically. The establishment of the factory will provide Pakistan with the opportunity to significantly upgrade its own air force while also creating jobs and fostering technological innovation. The partnership will allow Pakistani engineers and technicians to work alongside Turkish experts, gaining invaluable experience in the design and production of cutting-edge military technology.

In addition to strengthening its air force, Pakistan hopes that the collaboration will also encourage the development of its own defence industry, reducing its reliance on foreign military imports. The project is seen as an essential part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to modernise its armed forces and improve its military self-sufficiency.

Looking ahead

As the joint factory takes shape, both Turkey and Pakistan are optimistic about the future of their defence collaboration. The production of the KAAN fighter jet is expected to have a significant impact on both countries’ military capabilities, and could open the door to further cooperation on other defence projects in the years to come.

The collaboration marks a defining moment in the military relationship between Turkey and Pakistan, solidifying their partnership in a region where both nations face security challenges. With the KAAN fighter jet project now firmly underway, the two countries are poised to strengthen their defence capabilities and increase their influence in the global arms market.
