Ukrainian drones launched a significant attack deep within Russia’s Saratov region overnight, igniting a massive fire in the city of Engels, local officials reported on Wednesday.
The Saratov region, known for hosting the Engels air base, a critical hub for Russia’s strategic bomber planes and nuclear forces, has been a target of Ukrainian strikes in the past. However, there has been no confirmation as to whether the base itself was the intended target in this instance.
Oil facility hit in Saratov
Russian news outlets reported that the fire erupted at an oil facility, while unverified videos and photographs shared on social media depicted towering orange flames and thick smoke billowing into the night sky.
Regional governor Roman Busargin confirmed the “mass drone attack” on the cities of Saratov and Engels, located on opposite sides of the Volga River. While he acknowledged the fire at an industrial site, he stated there were no reported casualties.
“There are sufficient forces and resources to localise the fire,” Busargin assured residents via a post on Telegram.
Drone interceptions claimed by Russia
Russia’s Ministry of Defence issued a statement asserting that 11 Ukrainian drones had been destroyed over the Saratov region and an additional 21 over other areas, including the Azov Sea. Despite the claims of successful interceptions, the statement made no mention of damage or fires resulting from the attack.
The Engels air base, located approximately 730 kilometres (450 miles) southeast of Moscow and hundreds of kilometres from Ukraine’s border, has previously been targeted. In December 2022, a drone strike in the vicinity resulted in the deaths of three Russian air force personnel after the aircraft was intercepted.
