Wipro’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Subha Tatavarti, has resigned from her position effective from the close of business hours on August 16, 2024. In an official statement, Wipro confirmed that Tatavarti has decided to leave the company to pursue opportunities outside of Wipro.
Tatavarti, who joined Wipro in March 2021, was based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her resignation comes amidst a series of high-profile exits from the Bengaluru-based IT services firm. This departure follows the resignation of Chief Operating Officer (COO) Amit Choudhary on May 17, who also left to explore opportunities beyond Wipro. Choudhary was replaced by Sanjeev Jain, who will now be based in Bengaluru.
The recent string of resignations at Wipro includes that of Anis Chenchah, the president for Asia Pacific, India, Middle East, and Africa (APMEA), who resigned on May 10. These notable exits are part of a broader trend of leadership changes within the company. Tatavarti’s departure is particularly significant as it marks the third major resignation following Choudhary and Chenchah. Additionally, the company experienced a significant leadership change earlier in the year with the resignation of former CEO Thierry Delaporte on April 6.
Interestingly, Choudhary, Chenchah, and Delaporte all have prior associations with the France-headquartered IT services company Capgemini. Their departure from Wipro underscores a period of substantial transformation and turnover within the firm. Both Chenchah and Choudhary joined Wipro during Delaporte’s tenure as CEO, which adds another layer of context to the current changes in the company’s leadership structure.
Sanjeev Jain, who succeeded Choudhary as COO, joined Wipro in 2023 as the global head of business operations. Jain brings over 30 years of experience in leading large, diverse teams and scaling global operations. His responsibilities at Wipro have included overseeing the company’s talent supply chain, including the gig work platform TopGear, as well as functions related to talent skilling, global mobility, talent acquisition, and business resilience.
Wipro’s leadership transitions in 2023 also saw the departure of Chief Financial Officer Jatin Dalal, who joined Cognizant Technology Solutions shortly after leaving Wipro. This move led to a legal dispute between the two companies, which was settled on July 9. As part of the settlement, Cognizant agreed to pay $505,087 to Dalal to resolve the non-compete lawsuit filed by Wipro.
In addition to Dalal, Wipro experienced the exits of several other senior leaders in 2023, including Chief Growth Officer Stephanie Trautman and Chief Operations Officer Sanjeev Singh. This wave of leadership changes has sparked concern among analysts about Wipro’s declining revenues and market share over recent years.
The resignation of Thierry Delaporte earlier in the year was a pivotal moment for Wipro. The appointment of company veteran Pallia as the new CEO was viewed as a strategic move aimed at reversing the company’s fortunes and driving business growth. Analysts have generally supported this decision, recognizing that hiring an external CEO could lead to a transitional period and structural changes, but it was seen as a necessary step toward revitalizing the company’s performance.
As Wipro navigates these significant leadership changes, the company will need to address both the challenges of ongoing transitions and the strategic opportunities presented by new leadership. The recent exits highlight a period of transformation for Wipro, and the company’s ability to manage these changes effectively will be crucial for its future success.
