Unveiling the Secrets of the Tombs of Athribis Athribis—a city reeking of ancient Egyptian history—had been a mysterious complex for the excavation craze of archaeologists and historians until recently, though discoveries at the site had been quite insightful on their daily lives and culture. However, this was nothing in comparison with the recent unveiling of several tombs with elaborately laid-out stone sarcophagi and loads of golden ornaments. It is known that the tombs belonged to a couple and were built in the 3rd millennium BC in the western necropolis of the city. Although archaeologists have been excavating at this site for many years, the nicely decorated tombs have just been discovered.
“We were all just blown away by the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail in these tombs,” said Dr. Sarah Johnson, lead archaeologist on the project, in a press release. “The amount of wealth and status that is reflected in the construction of their graves, through intricate designs and materials, is really something.” One of the most awe-inspiring finds to be recovered is that of a high-ranking official among the elite of the Royal Court, covered with golden ornaments and highly decorated with symbols and hieroglyphs. Such golden amulets, scarabs, and other treasures found in the tomb are among the many golden items he used.
“This tomb is a game-changer,” explained Dr. Johnson. “It provides us with a unique glimpse into the lives of high-ranking officials in ancient Egypt and their connection to the ruling elite.” The second tomb was that of the priestess, with numerous offerings to the gods and goddesses for the sake of ancient Egypt. The colorful frescoes and hieroglyphs adorning the tomb revealed just part of the spiritual practice of the ancient Egyptians. “These tombs reveal a very different kind of treasure,” began Dr. Johnson. “They provide an exceptional window to the daily life and culture of the ancient Egyptians and invaluable insight into their beliefs and practices.” The discovery of the tombs has spurred debate among historians concerning the basis of social hierarchy and wealth distribution in ancient Egypt. Some would be of the opinion that they show a wide gap between the monied elite and the commoners.
Dr. Johnson said, “The discovery of these tombs shows a clear distinction between how the elite lived in contrast to the common people. There is a delimitation of a difference in wealth, status, and power.” Delighted to have had these tombs turned out, the archaeologists discuss all these debates, which have been so outstanding in showing an insight into the daily life and culture of the ancient Egyptians. “The tombs are an amazing find,” says Dr. Johnson. “The information offers us an insight into the world that has always fascinated us for a long time and gives some very valuable information about the lives of our ancestors.”
