TikTok stated that they have provided the PTA – Pakistan Telecommunication Authority with a special portal to remove offensive content, to Peshawar High Court. This was conveyed in a letter addressed to the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court, quoted by The Express Tribune news
History:
TikTok has faced multiple bans in Pakistan over the concerns of offensive content. Various petitions were filed in Pakistani courts seeking a ban on TikTok, citing offensive content and its bad impact on society, such as the bans of 2020 and 2021. It was first banned in October 2020 but was lifted within 10 days, similarly, It was further banned in March 2021 and July 2021 with a lifting duration of a few days.
Response:
In response to a recent petition seeking the grant of the app’s ban due to allegedly offensive content, TikTok took immediate measures and introduced a platform for PTA to report and block any such material.
TikTok emphasized its strict policy against such content in Pakistan. Although PTA has not reported any recent offensive material through the portal. It reiterated its commitment to upholding local regulations and the platform aims to maintain a safe environment for its users in Pakistan.
This matter is being under review by the Peshawar High Court.
