Heidi Thomas says she doesn’t believe the beloved BBC series will ‘ever end’
The creator of Call The Midwife, Heidi Thomas, has hinted that the long-running period drama may take a break in the future, but she does not believe it will “ever end”.
The BBC One series, which first aired in 2012, follows the lives of the midwives and nuns at Nonnatus House in London’s East End, capturing the challenges and triumphs of maternity care in post-war Britain. Over the years, it has become one of the most beloved dramas on British television, currently airing its 14th series.
In a recent interview with the Radio Times, Thomas acknowledged that discussions about the show’s future take place every year but reassured fans that Call The Midwife is not going anywhere permanently.
“Those of us who are most invested with the show, cast and producers alike, who have been there since the beginning, it is our lives. I don’t believe Call The Midwife will ever end. But I do think we might take a break at some point.”
The future of call the midwife
While Thomas did not confirm any immediate plans for a hiatus, she did suggest that the Call The Midwife universe could expand in new ways if the main series were to pause.
“I’m not in a position to talk about things currently, but there is a rolling, ongoing conversation about the show’s future that we have at this stage every year.”
Despite this uncertainty, Thomas remains committed to writing the drama for at least two more years, as the show has already been commissioned until series 16.
“One day, I’ll be able to look back and say, ‘God, I was lucky’. For Call The Midwife to be my mission, my defining show, my hope, my joy, my torment, for x number of years, I just feel really lucky.”
Thomas also revealed that her writing schedule is continuous, with work on the next Christmas special beginning just after the decorations come down each year.
Megan Cusack confirms departure
Meanwhile, fans of the show will be saying goodbye to Megan Cusack, who plays Nancy Corrigan.
Nancy’s character has been central to the current series, as she returns to Poplar for her wedding to fiancé Roger, played by Connor O’Donnell. However, Cusack, who joined the show in 2021, has now confirmed she will be leaving the role.
Speaking about her decision, she said:
“Sometimes, you’ve got to step out of your comfort zone to grow. I’ve learned so much, but I’m at the start of my career and I need to take a leap of faith.”
Cusack described her departure as “bittersweet” and shared how much she will miss the cast and crew.
“I’ve made lifelong friendships there and I get to take those with me. But when I think about not rocking up to set and seeing Tim, who’s part of the grips team, with his guitar hanging out of his van and serenading people at half six in the morning… it really has been like a family.”
What’s next for call the midwife?
As the series continues its 14th season, speculation will undoubtedly grow about the show’s future. While no formal break has been announced, Thomas’s comments suggest that the team is considering their long-term plans.
For now, Call The Midwife remains a firm favourite among viewers, with its heartfelt storytelling, historical accuracy, and emotionally powerful narratives keeping audiences engaged more than a decade after it first aired.
Fans can watch the latest episodes on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with the series expected to continue for at least two more years.
