This article describes a young girl, Mais Elbostami, a young Palestinian karate champion, who has overcome the trauma and displacement of war in Gaza to stimulate her dream of representing her country in international competitions, using her sport as an example to cover her experiences and raise the Palestinian flag abroad.
An 18-year-old Palestinian karate champion, Mais Elbostami, ran away from her home in Gaza after defeating her competitor and winning a competition, as Hamas militants instigated an attack on Israel, leading to a disastrous war. With over thirty- eight thousand people killed and much of Gaza reduced to debris, Elbostami’s family escaped to Cairo, where she restarted training with Egyptian coach Mamdouh Salem.
Despite the challenges and displacement, Elbostami has vowed to represent her country in international karate competitions, raising the Palestinian flag abroad and enhancing the Palestinian cause. She trains with great effort and tiredness, even in the streets and gardens around her house, due to less number of resources and gym time.
Elbostami departed from her coach, Jamal Al-Khairy, a teammate in the war, and has been relocated from her home. However, she remains committed to her sport and her cause, motivated by her coaches and teammates. Her determination and perseverance are an inspiration, and she hopes to make her country proud.
Karate has become a way for her to cover the trauma she experienced, allowing her to move away from reality and focus on her goal. Her coach states that she has great potential and is working to help her improve her talent. Elbostami’s story is an example of the human spirit’s ability to overcome even the most difficult challenges.
She desires to compete in the Egyptian national championships in August and eventually represent Palestine in international competitions. With her determination and flexibility, Elbostami is a symbol of hope for a better future, exciting others to pursue their passions despite adjustment.
