Florence Pugh has revealed that her hectic career is standing in the way of her love life, admitting that she’s “tricky” to date due to her relentless work schedule.
The 29-year-old British actress, who is currently making waves in Hollywood, has opened up about the challenges of balancing her rising stardom with personal aspirations, including her desire to settle down and start a family.
In a candid interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, the Oppenheimer and We Live In Time star said, “I’m more sympathetic to the people who are in love with me, because it’s not easy. I’m tricky – I’m always busy, I can never make dates. But it’s not good enough for me to ask someone to just accept that. I’ll just end up alone. I don’t want that – I want a family.”
Pugh, who has been working non-stop since her breakout role in Lady Macbeth, reflected on the toll that her demanding career has taken on her personal growth. “I’ve worked back-to-back since I started, and I’ve missed so much,” she said. “I’ve now come to terms with things that I don’t like about myself and want to change. I don’t want to have things just happen to me any more.”
The Oxford-born actress has had a whirlwind few years, starring in critically acclaimed projects such as Midsommar, Little Women, and Oppenheimer. More recently, she played Princess Irulan in the sci-fi blockbuster Dune: Part Two, alongside Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, and will next reprise her Marvel role as Yelena Belova in Thunderbolts, set for release later this year.
Despite her success, Pugh has been candid about the pressures of fame. She previously dated American actor and filmmaker Zach Braff, known for his role as JD in Scrubs, and the couple faced intense public scrutiny over their 21-year age gap. In April 2020, Pugh addressed the online criticism in a powerful Instagram video after receiving “abuse” for posting a birthday tribute to Braff. She later turned off the comment section on her post to protect her mental wellbeing.
“I have the right to hang out with and be with anyone I want to,” she said at the time, condemning the online vitriol directed towards her relationship.
While romance may be on hold, Pugh’s professional life continues to soar. Her upcoming Marvel film Thunderbolts sees her character performing one of the franchise’s most daring stunts to date. Filming a sequence on the Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur—the second tallest building in the world—Pugh, along with her stunt double and the female stunt co-ordinator, set a Guinness World Record.
“I got to do a stunt that has never been done before,” she said proudly. “My double, the female co-ordinator and I are all now Guinness World Record holders. I give so much of my body to what I do.”
Florence Pugh’s dedication to her craft is unquestionable, but the star appears to be on a path towards finding balance. Her desire for family life and personal connection is now emerging as a priority.
As she graces the cover of Harper’s Bazaar UK’s May issue—on sale from 17 April—Pugh remains one of Britain’s most talented and relatable young actresses, unafraid to share her vulnerabilities while continuing to push the boundaries of her career.
