Veteran Bollywood actor Govinda was discharged from a private hospital in Mumbai on Friday, four days after sustaining a leg injury when his revolver accidentally discharged. The actor, known for his memorable performances in films such as Love 86, Swarg, Dulhe Raja, and Partner, had undergone surgery earlier in the week and is now recuperating.
The 60-year-old actor, who is also a member of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, was wheeled out of the hospital by his family members, including his wife Sunita Ahuja and daughter Tina Ahuja. Govinda was seen wearing a cast on his left leg and greeted the media and fans with folded hands as he exited the hospital.
In his first public statement since the accident, the actor expressed gratitude to his fans, the media, and the authorities. “I thank members of the press, the authorities, and my fans who love me. Their wishes have kept me safe, and I thank them all,” Govinda said with visible emotion as he acknowledged the outpouring of support.
The Incident
The incident occurred at Govinda’s Mumbai residence on Tuesday as he was preparing to leave for the airport. His revolver accidentally went off, and the bullet hit him just below his left knee. His family rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he underwent surgery to treat the injury. Dr. Ramesh Agarwal, the doctor who operated on the actor, confirmed that Govinda had sustained a deep wound and received 8-10 stitches.
“Govinda’s injury was serious but manageable. Fortunately, the bullet didn’t damage any major nerves or bones. We performed a successful surgery, and now he just needs time to heal,” Dr. Agarwal explained.
The actor is expected to make a full recovery, although his rehabilitation will take time. As per medical advice, Govinda will be required to remain on bed rest for at least six weeks to ensure proper healing.
Family statement and health update
Sunita Ahuja, Govinda’s wife, addressed reporters outside the hospital, providing an update on his health. “He will be discharged today, but he will have difficulty standing. He is doing fine and will start dancing again in a few days. Everyone has prayed for him, and we are blessed to have the protection of Mata Rani,” she said.
Mrs. Ahuja added that doctors had advised her husband to avoid social interactions for the next several weeks to minimize the risk of infection. “At home, the doctor has instructed him to rest in bed for six weeks. We will not allow many visitors because he needs to focus on his recovery,” she said.
Fans of the actor have been expressing their concerns and sending wishes for his speedy recovery. Govinda, known for his comic timing and extraordinary dancing abilities, assured his supporters that he would be back on his feet soon.
Investigation underway
Although Govinda has not lodged a formal complaint, the local police have launched an investigation into the accidental discharge of the firearm. Additionally, the Mumbai crime branch has initiated a parallel inquiry to determine if there were any procedural lapses in the handling of the weapon.
While the police have refrained from making any official statement regarding the ongoing investigation, sources say that authorities are looking into the actor’s firearm license and the circumstances under which the revolver was discharged. As of now, no legal action has been taken, and it appears that the incident was an unfortunate accident.
Govinda’s career and legacy
Govinda has been a beloved figure in Bollywood for decades, particularly known for his comedic roles and iconic dance numbers that entertained audiences through the 80s and 90s. With blockbuster hits like Raja Babu, Hero No. 1, and Coolie No. 1, he became one of the most popular actors in Indian cinema. His natural flair for humor, impeccable timing, and distinct dance style earned him a special place in the hearts of fans.
In recent years, Govinda has been less active in films, focusing more on political commitments and occasional appearances on reality shows. Despite stepping away from the limelight, his influence and charm continue to resonate with fans of all generations.
As he now embarks on a journey toward recovery, his supporters hope to see him return to his energetic self soon. His discharge from the hospital marks a positive step in that direction, and the actor’s fans will no doubt be counting down the days until he is back on his feet, perhaps even showcasing his legendary dance moves once again.
For now, however, Govinda will be resting at home with his family as he continues his recovery from the unfortunate accident.
