HBO confirms another ‘Promising’ game of thrones spin-off is in the works
HBO has confirmed that another Game of Thrones spin-off series is currently in development, following the success of House of the Dragon.
Despite House of the Dragon‘s second season ending in August to mixed reviews, with some fans and critics expressing disappointment over its understated finale, the series has already been renewed for a third season. Meanwhile, another spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is set to debut in late 2025.
Based on George R.R. Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight, the upcoming series stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall. The story follows the adventures of the legendary knight and his young squire, egg, who later becomes King Aegon V Targaryen. The book is the first in the Dunk and Egg series, with subsequent novellas, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight, also planned for adaptation in future seasons.
HBO appears keen to continue expanding the Game of Thrones universe, with Francesca Orsi, the network’s head of drama series and films, revealing that another spin-off is in early development. Speaking to Deadline, orsi stated: “We have other spin-offs that we’re working on right now, one of which – which I won’t get into – is very promising, and it is still within the Targaryen line.”
She further added: “There’s a number of other spin-offs, but we can’t really guarantee which will move forward. However, we are allocating significant budgets to the others. I would say this [A knight of the seven kingdoms] is the most intimate one.”
House Targaryen has remained central to House of the Dragon, which chronicles the events leading up to the Targaryen civil war, known as the dance of the dragons. This period marked a time when the powerful dynasty ruled over the seven kingdoms of westeros.
However, Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin has not held back in his criticism of House of the Dragon, stating that deviations from his original source material have “weakened” the show. He has also hinted that there may be “larger and more toxic” changes planned for the third and fourth seasons.
Despite this, Martin has been more optimistic about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, having already watched all six episodes of the first season. Writing in a recent blog post, the 76-year-old author shared his enthusiasm: “Ira [Parker, showrunner] and his team wrapped the first season months ago and moved straight into post-production.”
He continued: “I’ve seen all six episodes now (the last two in rough cuts, admittedly), and I loved them. Dunk and egg have always been favourites of mine, and the actors we found to portray them are just incredible. The rest of the cast are terrific as well. Wait until you guys meet the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall.”
With House of the Dragon season three already in production and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms set for a 2025 release, HBO’s commitment to expanding the Game of Thrones universe remains unwavering. While details about the newly confirmed spin-off remain under wraps, fans can be assured that the world of Westeros is far from finished.
