Prominent K-pop artist Jennie Kim was the target of criticism after it was revealed that she was vaping indoors in a video. Though removed, the video, which was first posted to her YouTube channel, went viral very fast.
In the footage, stylists were seen nearby while Jennie vaped in an enclosed space while getting her hair and cosmetics done.
Fans became divided after the occurrence. While some defended her freedom to make personal decisions, others expressed displeasure and worry about the health implications for people in her immediate vicinity.
Jennie apologized on X (previously Twitter) through her label Odd Atelier, admitting her error and expressing her sincere apologies for upsetting the staff members in attendance.
The label also promised fans that steps would be taken to avoid future occurrences of this kind and expressed Jennie’s personal apologies to the workers.
K-pop idols frequently face harsh criticism. Their private behavior is closely observed, which causes noteworthy public and media responses.
The episode reminds me of earlier instances where K-pop celebrities were subjected to criticism for their personal decisions. For instance, when it was revealed that Karina from another K-pop group was seeing actor Lee Jae-wook, she was met with harsh criticism and ended their relationship.
