Kangana Ranaut Receives Death Threats Over ‘Emergency’ Film, Seeks Police Protection
In a disturbing turn of events, Bollywood actress and BJP Member of Parliament (MP) Kangana Ranaut has reached out to law enforcement authorities after a video surfaced on social media showing a group of men issuing death threats against her. The threats are related to her upcoming film Emergency, where Ranaut plays the role of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The film has already sparked controversy due to its portrayal of sensitive historical events, particularly the representation of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the character of Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
The Video of Threats
The video, which has been widely circulated online, shows six men sitting in a circle in a room. Among them, two are dressed in the traditional attire of Nihang Sikhs, which is often associated with a sect of armed Sikh warriors. One of the men speaks directly into the camera, warning that if the movie is released, it will be met with strong condemnation from the Sikh community. “Your movie will be received with chappals,” he declares, using the Hindi word for slippers, which signifies rejection and disrespect.
Another man in the video, identified as Vicky Thomas Singh, who describes himself as a social media influencer on X (formerly Twitter), delivers a more ominous warning. Referring to Ranaut’s portrayal of Indira Gandhi, he says, “If in the movie he [Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale] is portrayed as a terrorist, remember what happened to the person [Indira Gandhi] whose movie you are doing.” He goes on to mention Indira Gandhi’s assassins, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, both of whom were involved in her assassination in 1984. “Who were Satwant Singh and Beant Singh? We will offer our heads, but those who can offer heads can also chop them off,” he adds, implying a willingness to resort to violence.
Ranaut’s Response and Legal Action
Reacting to the video, Kangana Ranaut took to social media to share the post and seek help from the authorities. She tagged the Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP), Himachal Pradesh Police, and Punjab Police, urging them to look into the matter. “Please look into this,” she wrote on X, expressing her concern for her safety and that of her film crew. Ranaut’s public appeal has sparked a wave of reactions, with many supporting her call for protection and condemning the threats of violence.
Calls for a Ban and Controversial Reactions
The release of Emergency has been a contentious topic, particularly among certain Sikh groups who believe the film promotes an “anti-Sikh” narrative. Several organizations, including the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), have demanded a ban on the film, arguing that it misrepresents Sikhs and portrays them unfairly as separatists. They fear that the film’s depiction of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the political actions of Indira Gandhi could rekindle old wounds and lead to misunderstandings about the Sikh community’s role during that period.
The film’s trailer, which highlights Indira Gandhi’s political journey, her relationship with her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, and her handling of national crises, has drawn mixed reactions. While some view it as a critical exploration of historical events, others see it as a biased portrayal that could incite communal tension. The depiction of controversial figures like Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who was involved in the Khalistan movement and portrayed as a central character in the film, has added fuel to the fire.
Concerns Over Freedom of Expression
Kangana Ranaut, known for her outspoken nature and fearless roles, has previously faced threats and backlash over her controversial statements and films. This latest incident raises significant concerns about the safety of artists and filmmakers who tackle politically sensitive topics. It also sparks a broader debate about freedom of expression in the arts, and the right of filmmakers to explore historical narratives without facing threats of violence.
As the situation unfolds, the police have yet to make an official statement regarding the threats. However, Ranaut’s public appeal and the video circulating online underscore the growing tensions surrounding the release of Emergency. As the film industry watches closely, the incident highlights the challenges filmmakers face when addressing historical events that continue to evoke strong emotions and controversy.
With Emergency set to release soon, the question remains whether the film will be able to screen without further incident, or if it will become another flashpoint in the ongoing debate over artistic freedom and historical representation in India.
