Meet the Actor Who Took to the Silver Screen to Repay His Mother’s Loan and Now Owns a Production House Worth Crores
In the glitzy world of Bollywood and regional cinema, stories of struggle and perseverance often inspire many. One such tale is that of Saravanan Sivakumar, popularly known as Suriya. The talented Tamil actor’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a leading star in the industry is a testament to his dedication and hard work.
The Unforeseen Journey into Acting
Suriya, the son of veteran actor Sivakumar, might have had a foot in the door of the film industry, but his path to success was anything but straightforward. In a candid interview with Pinkvilla, he opened up about a pivotal moment that led him to become an actor: his mother’s loan of Rs 25,000. Suriya revealed that he had no idea about the loan until he learned of the financial burden his family was under. “Mom said that our bank balance had never been more than one lakh or one and a half lakh. Dad never insisted on his salary; he would just wait for it to come when it did,” he explained, reflecting on his family’s financial struggles.
Before venturing into acting, Suriya worked in a garment factory as a trainee, earning a meager Rs 750 for 15 days of work. Despite this, he was determined to improve his family’s situation. “After three years in the business, I earned Rs 8,000 a month. I always hoped to start my own garment business, looking for my father to invest Rs 1 crore in my venture,” he recalled.
Stepping into Cinema for a Cause
Suriya’s decision to step into the film industry was not driven by ambition but rather by necessity. He took up acting to help his mother pay off the loan. “I never thought I would be in the film industry; I never wanted to face the camera and never dreamt of becoming an actor. I came into the industry for the Rs 25,000 to give back to my mom and say, ‘Your loan is over, and you don’t have to worry,’” he said, highlighting the selfless motivation that guided him.
His acting career officially began with his debut film, Nerrukku Ner, released in 1997. Directed by Vasanth and produced by the acclaimed Mani Ratnam, the film featured actor Vijay in a leading role, but it was Suriya who would eventually carve out a niche for himself in the Tamil film industry.
A Flourishing Career
Over the years, Suriya has built an impressive career, starring in numerous successful films and earning accolades for his performances. His versatility as an actor, evident in roles ranging from action-packed performances in films like Singam to thought-provoking roles in Jai Bhim, has endeared him to fans and critics alike.
As of now, Suriya is gearing up for his highly anticipated film, Kanguva, where he will be seen in a dual role. The film promises to showcase his range as an actor and further cement his status in the industry.
From Struggles to Success: The Production House
Today, Suriya’s journey has come full circle. Not only has he successfully paid off his mother’s loan, but he has also established a production house that is valued in crores. His company, 2D Entertainment, has produced several critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, contributing significantly to the Tamil film industry.
Suriya’s story is a powerful reminder that sometimes, the strongest motivations stem from love and responsibility. His rise from a garment factory worker to a beloved film star and producer exemplifies the extraordinary potential of hard work and determination. Suriya continues to inspire many with his journey, proving that the right reasons can lead to a fulfilling career and a lasting legacy in cinema. As he looks forward to future projects, fans eagerly await what this remarkable actor will deliver next.
