The box office journey of “Stree 2,” directed by Amar Kaushik, has been nothing short of remarkable, despite a noticeable dip in its earnings on the second Wednesday since its release. According to a report by Sacnilk, the horror-comedy collected Rs 23 lakh on its 14th day, bringing its total domestic box office collection to an impressive Rs 414.78 crore. Released on August 15, 2024, the film stars Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor in lead roles, alongside Aparshakti Khurrana, Abhishek Banerjee, Pankaj Tripathi, and Vijay Raaz, with a special cameo appearance by Varun Dhawan. Produced by Dinesh Vijan and Jyoti Deshpande under the banners of Maddock Films and Jio Studios, “Stree 2” has captivated audiences across India with its unique blend of horror and comedy.
Despite the recent dip in earnings, the film’s overall performance has been strong. On Tuesday, Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the film’s box office success, particularly highlighting its dominance during the partial holiday of Janmashtami. Adarsh wrote, “#Stree2 remains UNSTOPPABLE, capitalising on the partial holiday boost [#Janmashtami]… With no major release/s on the horizon, the path ahead looks clear for the film to march towards the ₹ 500 cr mark.” His optimistic forecast reflects the lack of significant competition at the box office, allowing “Stree 2” to maintain its stronghold, especially in mass-market regions.
Adarsh also provided a detailed breakdown of the film’s box office earnings during its second week, further underscoring its success. He noted that “Stree 2” collected Rs 19.30 crore on Friday, Rs 33.80 crore on Saturday, Rs 40.75 crore on Sunday, and Rs 20.20 crore on Monday, bringing its cumulative total to Rs 421.85 crore in India alone. These figures illustrate the film’s sustained appeal and its ability to draw audiences to theaters even after the initial release hype has subsided.
In an exclusive interview with NDTV’s Abira Dhar, Aparshakti Khurana, who plays the character Bittu in “Stree 2,” shared his thoughts on the film’s box office performance. Khurana expressed his surprise and delight at the film’s success, stating, “When we were shooting, we knew we were doing something very nice and special and happy. But we did not know that the movie will touch 400 crores in just a week or we will get so much love from the people. It is such a happy vibe. I really pinch myself to believe this is where we have reached with the film. We knew we will do good numbers but this is unprecedented numbers.” His comments highlight the unexpected yet overwhelming positive reception that “Stree 2” has received from audiences.
“Stree 2” faced competition at the box office from other significant releases, including John Abraham and Sharvari Wagh’s “Vedaa,” and Akshay Kumar and Vaani Kapoor’s “Khel Khel Mein.” Despite the competition, “Stree 2” has managed to carve out a substantial niche for itself, continuing to attract viewers with its mix of humor and horror.
As the film approaches the Rs 500 crore mark, it stands as a testament to the growing appeal of genre-blending films in the Indian market. The success of “Stree 2” not only reflects the strength of its star-studded cast and the effective direction by Amar Kaushik but also underscores the increasing appetite for innovative storytelling in Indian cinema. With its current momentum, “Stree 2” is likely to continue its box office reign, further solidifying its place as one of the biggest hits of 2024.
