The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) is set to make a significant stride in promoting gender equality and diversity in the film industry by launching its inaugural Women’s Empowerment section. This initiative, set to debut at this year’s festival, marks a historic moment not just for TIFF, but for Asian film festivals at large, which have traditionally lagged behind their North American and European counterparts in integrating diversity, equality, and inclusion into their frameworks.
A Landmark Initiative
The Women’s Empowerment section is part of TIFF’s broader effort to address gender imbalances in the film industry and showcase the achievements of female filmmakers. The festival, co-hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, announced that the new section aims to “take TIFF a further step forward on gender issues, celebrate women’s achievements, and further expand the horizons of future cinema.” This initiative is expected to feature seven films directed by women or focusing on female-centric stories.
Andrijana Cvetkovikj, a prominent figure in international cinema and the first Macedonian ambassador to Japan, has been appointed as the senior programmer for this new section. Cvetkovikj, who previously served as a jury member at the 34th TIFF in 2021, expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting the evolving landscape of filmmaking. “For years, screen representation has been limited by a predominantly male perspective, missing a fuller range of experiences. However, with advancements in digital technology, filmmaking has become more accessible, leading to a surge in female directors, writers, and protagonists. This year’s Tokyo IFF program highlights these emerging voices, celebrating their diverse stories and contributions to cinema,” she said.
The Broader Context of Gender Equality in Film
The establishment of the Women’s Empowerment section is a continuation of TIFF’s commitment to gender equality, following its 2021 signing with Collectif 50/50. This international organization advocates for gender parity in the film industry, and TIFF’s partnership with them made it the first Asian film festival to align with such a cause. The creation of this section represents a further deepening of this commitment, acknowledging the vital contributions of women to the film industry and striving to offer them a more prominent platform.
In addition to the screening of selected films, the Women’s Empowerment section will also host a symposium and screening talk sessions, creating a space for dialogue and reflection on gender issues in cinema. These discussions are anticipated to be a highlight of the festival, bringing together filmmakers, critics, and audiences to explore the challenges and opportunities for women in the film industry.
Celebrating Irie Yu in Nippon Cinema Now
While the Women’s Empowerment section is a notable new addition, TIFF will also continue its tradition of celebrating Japanese cinema through its Nippon Cinema Now strand. This year, the spotlight will be on Irie Yu, a director known for his dynamic work across both independent films and major studio productions. The strand will feature five of his films, including his latest release, “A Girl Named Ann,” which is regarded as a significant milestone in his career.
Irie Yu’s body of work, which includes titles such as “8000 Miles: SR Saitama’s Rapper” (2009) and “The Sun” (2016), reflects his ability to navigate different genres and filmmaking environments with ease. Tokyo IFF programmer Ichiyama Shozo emphasized Irie’s role in shaping the future of Japanese cinema, noting that the curated feature is designed not only to celebrate his past achievements but also to introduce his work to a broader international audience.
Looking Ahead
The 2024 Tokyo International Film Festival, running from October 28 to November 6, promises to be a dynamic event, with the bulk of its lineup to be revealed in late September. Alongside the main festival, the accompanying TIFFCOM rights market will take place from October 30 to November 1, providing a platform for industry professionals to network and explore new opportunities.
As the festival embraces this new chapter with its Women’s Empowerment section, it signals a commitment to a more inclusive and diverse cinematic future, where the voices and stories of women are given the recognition they deserve. This initiative, combined with the celebration of influential filmmakers like Irie Yu, ensures that TIFF remains a vital platform for both contemporary and emerging cinematic talents.
