King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has launched a Center of Excellence (CoE) in Generative AI to increase research and development in the field. The CoE desires to be a premier hub for pioneering generative AI technology in Saudi Arabia, handling challenges in health, sustainability, energy, and economies. Generative AI has the potential to transform civilization, with applications in various sectors.
The CoE will develop GenAI models for clinical image analysis, drug design, Earth observation, chemical reaction optimization, and advanced material discovery. It will also establish GenAI-based education models and support the creative industry. The centre understands the need for access to large-scale data, talent development, GenAI hardware infrastructure, and investment to advance the Saudi GenAI sector.
The CoE will prioritise trustworthiness, internationalisation, open access, and environmental sustainability in its research projects. It desires to deploy GenAI models that are provided with properties needed for ubiquitous, efficient, and trustworthy deployment. The centre will also point to specialising in GenAI models for solutions in various sectors and delivering translational research and talent development.
KAUST’s mission is to enable GenAI research and development to find solutions aligned with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. The CoE will work with partners in the Kingdom and worldwide to identify specific complications to tackle within each of the 4 national priority RDI pillars. The centre’s efforts desire to contribute significantly to Saudi Arabia’s GDP by 2030 and add value to the global economy.
The launch of the CoE in Generative AI at KAUST highlights a significant step forward in the development of AI technology in Saudi Arabia. The centre’s focus on trustworthiness, internationalization, and sustainability will help state that GenAI is developed and deployed responsibly, benefiting both the Kingdom and the world at large.
