Amman – Kuwait has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), as the agency grapples with mounting financial pressures.
On Thursday, Kuwaiti Ambassador to Jordan, Hamad Mari, handed over Kuwait’s annual financial contribution to Tamara Rifai, Director of External Relations and Communications at UNRWA. The ceremony, held in Amman, highlighted Kuwait’s steadfast efforts to help the agency meet its fiscal responsibilities and maintain its essential services for Palestine refugees.
A lifeline for Palestine refugees
In his remarks, Ambassador Mari underscored Kuwait’s dedication to fulfilling its financial obligations to UNRWA, recognising the agency’s pivotal role in supporting Palestine refugees.
“Kuwait is committed to standing by UNRWA and ensuring its ability to continue delivering vital services to those in need,” Mari said, reaffirming his country’s steadfast support for the Palestinian cause.
Tamara Rifai, speaking on behalf of UNRWA, expressed profound gratitude for Kuwait’s enduring generosity. She emphasised that the contribution is critical to sustaining the agency’s operations, which include a wide array of services such as education, healthcare, and social support programmes.
“Kuwait’s support enables UNRWA to uphold its mission of providing essential services to Palestine refugees in the occupied Palestinian Territories, Jordan, and other host countries,” Rifai said.
UNRWA’s critical role
UNRWA serves over 5 million registered Palestine refugees, operating in territories including Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. The agency’s initiatives span a broad spectrum, from operating schools and health centres to providing emergency assistance in times of crisis.
Despite its importance, the agency has faced persistent funding shortages, a challenge that has intensified in recent years due to regional instability and increased demand for its services.
Rifai highlighted the indispensable role of UNRWA’s network of schools, which provide education to over half a million children, and its healthcare facilities that cater to the urgent medical needs of refugees.
“These programmes are not merely services; they are lifelines that enable refugees to build a future amidst adversity,” Rifai stated.
Kuwait’s continued support
Kuwait’s contribution comes at a crucial time for UNRWA, which is battling a significant financial deficit. The country has long been a key donor to the agency, reflecting its commitment to international humanitarian efforts and solidarity with Palestine.
Ambassador Mari emphasised that Kuwait’s support is not limited to financial aid but extends to diplomatic backing for the Palestinian cause on international platforms.
“This contribution is a testament to Kuwait’s enduring solidarity with Palestine refugees and its recognition of their right to live with dignity,” he added.
Challenges facing UNRWA
UNRWA’s operations have been under strain due to a combination of factors, including geopolitical challenges and a decline in contributions from traditional donors. The agency has frequently warned of the dire consequences of its funding gaps, which threaten to disrupt critical services.
As regional conflicts and economic pressures intensify, the needs of Palestine refugees continue to grow. UNRWA has repeatedly called on the international community to step up its support to ensure the sustainability of its programmes.
Rifai stressed the urgency of collective action to address the agency’s financial challenges. “The continued support of donors like Kuwait is vital, but the international community must also share the responsibility to sustain UNRWA’s mission,” she said.
Looking ahead
Kuwait’s latest contribution is a beacon of hope for UNRWA as it navigates an increasingly complex landscape. The financial support not only helps bridge funding gaps but also reinforces the broader international commitment to the Palestinian cause.
As the agency works to adapt to evolving challenges, the role of reliable donors like Kuwait remains critical. The support ensures that Palestine refugees can access the education, healthcare, and opportunities they need to build a future amidst uncertainty.
In closing, both Mari and Rifai expressed hope for continued collaboration and greater international solidarity to uphold the rights and dignity of Palestine refugees.
As the world watches, Kuwait’s enduring generosity and commitment serve as a reminder of the power of unity and compassion in addressing one of the world’s most protracted humanitarian crises.
