Kuala Lumpur says, “It will fight any claim on its territories”, reported in The Pakistan Today News.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia on Sunday abandoned the Philippines’ fresh sea border affirmation, expressing, “It will fight any claim on its territories.”
“Malaysia is an independent sovereign nation that will fight any claim on our territories,” Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan claimed in reply to a prudent notice pointed out by the Philippines with the UN, local English daily Star documented.
It arrived after Manila justly exposed the UN that, “It was extending its continental shelf but laid claims on the Sabah state of Malaysia.”
Malaysia surrendered a prudent notice to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres late last month, denying a filing from the Philippines to the UN.
Manila had documented its document entitlement to an illustrative continental stand in the Western Palawan area of the South China Sea, “defining the seabed areas over which it has sovereign and exclusive rights to exploit for natural resources.”
“In its note, the Philippines claims that its maritime border runs through Sabah. If this is used as a yardstick, then it’s claiming that Sabah belongs to the Philippines,” Mohamad voiced.
Mohamad, also known as Tok Mat, counted that Sabah and Sarawak formally evolved as part of Malaysia many years ago, which was acknowledged by the UN.
“We are an independent and sovereign nation, and no one can just come and stake a claim on any of our territories,” he claimed.
The conflict over the request of Sabah, found on the northern tip of Borneo, stems from colonial-era agreements.
Malaysia combined Sabah in 1963, moving Manila to accommodate a formal declaration, reasoning that Sabah “rightfully” connected to the Philippines.
Kuala Lumpur, however, claims that the region was legally surrendered to it by the British.
The conflict has resumed, occasionally extending up due to prudent notices, lawful actions, and even armed attacks.
