India, May 29, 2024:
The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued notice to the congress parties and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to make their campaign leaders follow the Model Code of Conduct during the campaigns. The ECi is dissatisfied with explanations proffered on statements made by campaigners during contentious campaigns by both parties, deeming such apologies a no-no.
The Election Commission of India (ECI), requested Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to prevent misleading statements that may imply abolition or sale of the Indian Constitution. According to ECI, there should be orderliness of the campaign speeches, not allowing them to cause panic among voters or agitation.
It’s not only Congress that has complaints. The BJP, led by its chief, J P Nadda, also received a communication from the ECI, which expressed concern about their responses. According to ECI, the party’s efforts to defend their star campaigners’ ways and expressions without proof alongside allegations against Congress members only serve to agitate citizens on avoidable lines.
After their respective parties separately complained, the ECI warned both Kharge and Nadda. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was accused by Congress of MCC violations in a complaint on April 21, in which five instances were cited, such as an appeal to voters not to support the Grand Old Party at all because it opposed a particular religion. In its April 19 complaint, the BJP accused Rahul Gandhi of disparaging and forthcomingly rude to Modi.
The ECI’s strict position emphasizes why it is essential to keep ethical standards in political communication and why election campaigns must be undertaken with a commitment to established guidelines. Through this move, the ECI shows its determination to maintain integrity in the electoral process and advance equitable and transparent electoral processes in India.
