California Lawmakers are expressing their concern regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI, more specifically in political advertisements and education, prompting them to propose new regulations to address these issues.
“As this technology becomes cheaper, faster and easier for the public to use, and is embraced by candidates and political campaigns, its effect on democracy requires us to act,” Ms. Cabrillo told The Epoch Times on June 28.
Assembly Bill 2355 was authored by Democratic Assemblywomen – Wendy Carrillo and Sabrina Cervantes. This bill mandates that any use of AI in order to alter images, voice, or films in political advertisements must be publicly disclosed.
It was passed in the Assembly without opposition in May and is now being reviewed in the Senate committee. If signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom, the bill will take effect on January 1, 2025.
Ms Cabrillo stated that these rapid improvements in AI have resulted in the creation of materials “that are likely to pass off as convincingly real when they are fake.”
Recent amendments to the bill will limit its implementation to state campaign committees, Ms. Cabrillo said.
“This change sets a strong precedent of making Generative AI disclosures a part of our existing transparency requirements,” she stated.
Meanwhile, on June 13, Ms Cervantes stated in a press conference
“While there is room for artificial intelligence to contribute to community college classrooms, human faculty remain best suited to teach our students,”
