New York June 14, 2024:
As the level of e-waste produced by discarded and non-functional electrical appliances rises, the New York state legislature has recently enacted the ‘Digital Fair Repair Act.’ This progressive move allows consumers to repair their electronics like smartphones, laptops, or tablets at home or from a Third-party repairer of the consumer’s choice.
It was because the right-to-repair regulation had ensured that independents gained access to parts, docs, and tools from the manufacturing companies, desisting from incorporating planned obsolesce and restrictive repair measures.
The approval of this law would be a significant achievement for the Right to Repair campaign, which is becoming popular worldwide. The movement’s goal is to minimize the generation of e-waste since consumers can merely fix their gadgets instead of replacing them. A survey carried out in the past year reveals that 57% of participants desire the flexibility to fix their appliances at home, and 89% are concerned about e-waste.
The Digital Fair Repair Act is likely to positively affect the environment since it is estimated to reduce the level of e-waste produced in the future. The United States alone produces 6. an average of 9 tonnes per year for e-waste, and this is where this ruling is believed to be a definite measure to address this issue.
Furthermore, the law will also economically benefit customers since there is always an opportunity to save a few bucks when a device is repaired rather than purchasing a new one. The bill is to start from the 1st of July 2024, and the plan is expected to work; other states and countries will also follow the same rules and regulations.
