On Wednesday, Justice Trudeau – the Canadian Prime Minister announced that Lt. Gen. Jennie Carignan is appointed as the first woman to lead the CAF – Canadian Armed Forces.
She will be promoted to the rank of general and will replace the current chief of the Defense Staff, Gen. Wayne Eyre, who is soon retiring.
This was announced in a news release by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Talking about the career history of Carignan,
She has a military career spanning over 35 years and has commanded two combat Engineer Regiments and the 2nd Canadian Division. In this tenure of hers, she led more than 10,000 soldiers.
Ultimately in 2008, she became the first woman in CAF history to lead an arms unit. Not only this, she has also led NATO Mission Iraq from 2019 to 2020 and has been deployed to Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Syria.
However, since her promotion in 2021, she focused on transforming military culture as a Chief of Professional Conduct and Culture.
The formal appointment will take effect at a ceremony on July 18
