Pakistan, May 29, 2024: Asad Qaiser Elahi, the President of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been granted bail after Lahore High Court (LHC) released him for the party’s demonstrations against the government, following his arrest over anti-regime agitation by PTI on April 22, alleging electoral malpractices and political witch-hunts.
After listening to arguments from both sides, The LHC granted Elahi bail, noting that the PTI leader hadn’t taken part in any violent activities during demonstrations. However, Elahi was instructed not to join any other troublemaking protests or gatherings as a condition for this bail.
Elahi has been set free while PTI’s anger with the ruling regime over oppression and manipulation of elections weighs on the surface. This has compelled the PTI to march in protest across the state, seeking nullification of the public office holders and new polls.
The administration has responded to the PTI’s demos sternly: the police officers used physical power to scatter the onlookers and apprehended several PTI officials as well as members. It is still unstable, and neither party is willing to change its position. Many hope Elahi’s release may de-escalate the tensions in the PTI-government stalemate, leading to peaceful conflict resolution.
