In a dramatic post-polling incident in Nagpur, Congress workers allegedly attacked a car transporting an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) to a strong room on Wednesday, prompting a swift police response. The clash unfolded in the Killa area of Central Nagpur constituency, following the conclusion of the Maharashtra Assembly elections.
The Nagpur police clarified that the EVM involved in the incident was a standby unit and had not been used during polling. Fortunately, the machine escaped damage during the attack. However, tensions soared as allegations surfaced regarding violations of election protocols in the handling of the machine.
Allegations of protocol violation
The incident began when polling officials were transporting the EVM from booth number 268 to the designated strong room in a car. Opposition Congress workers, alleging a breach of protocol, claimed the machine was being taken to a photocopy shop for document printing. This accusation raised suspicion and anger among party members.
According to eyewitness accounts, the vehicle was intercepted by a group of individuals who began questioning the poll officials about their actions. Their concerns quickly escalated into violence, with Congress workers reportedly pelting stones at the car.
Police swiftly intervene
Residents of the area alerted the police, who responded promptly to contain the situation. A team from the Kotwali police station arrived on the scene and secured both the EVM and the polling officials. The vehicle was subsequently escorted to the Kotwali police station for further investigation.
Reports circulated that the officials inside the car were physically attacked during the altercation, but this has not been confirmed by the police. Senior officers assured that a thorough inquiry was underway to establish the facts of the case.
Political leaders clash
The incident drew the attention of senior political leaders from both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, who rushed to the Kotwali police station. Heated exchanges ensued between the rival parties, each accusing the other of undermining the integrity of the election process.
A senior Congress leader, speaking to reporters outside the station, alleged, “This is a blatant violation of electoral procedures. We have every right to question any irregularities, and the public has a right to transparency in the handling of EVMs.”
A BJP representative countered the claims, stating, “The Congress is attempting to stir unrest and undermine the electoral process. The EVM in question was a standby unit, and no foul play occurred.”
Ongoing investigation
The Nagpur police confirmed that they were registering an offence based on their preliminary findings. Senior officials have promised an impartial probe to determine whether election protocols were indeed breached and if the attack was premeditated.
“The EVM was not damaged and remains intact. We are thoroughly investigating the incident to ascertain responsibility and prevent such occurrences in the future,” a senior police official stated.
EVM protocols under scrutiny
This incident has reignited debates about the handling of EVMs during elections. Standby machines are standard protocol to address technical failures during polling, and strict guidelines govern their transport and storage. Any deviation from these guidelines raises concerns over the integrity of the electoral process.
Elections for the 288-member Maharashtra Legislative Assembly took place on Wednesday. While the polling process across the state was largely peaceful, the Nagpur incident has added a layer of controversy to the elections, with both major political parties trading barbs.
Public reaction
The incident has sparked mixed reactions among residents and political observers. While some expressed concern over the alleged mishandling of the EVM, others criticised the violent response from political workers.
“This is not the way to address concerns. Violence only undermines the credibility of our democracy,” said a local resident.
As investigations continue, the incident highlights the importance of transparency and adherence to protocol in safeguarding electoral processes. With tensions high in the aftermath of polling, all eyes are on the authorities to ensure justice and accountability in this contentious case.
