BENGALURU/MYSURU — Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah faces a fresh legal challenge as petitioner Snehamayi Krishna has accused him of contempt of court. Krishna alleges that Siddaramaiah, in a writ petition concerning the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) land allotment case, deliberately concealed critical information, thereby misleading the court. The controversy has intensified with claims of document tampering and erasure.
Earlier this week, the Karnataka High Court had granted Siddaramaiah temporary relief by directing a lower court to postpone further proceedings until August 29, when the case is set to be reviewed again. Krishna has vowed to bring all relevant issues to the court’s attention on that date.
At the heart of the allegations is a 2014 letter purportedly written by Siddaramaiah’s wife, BM Parvathi, addressed to MUDA. Krishna contends that the second page of this letter was deliberately excluded from the documents submitted to the court and that a whitener was used to obscure specific details. According to Krishna, the erasure removed a request for land in the upscale Vijayanagar Layout, raising serious concerns about the transparency and authenticity of the document.
Krishna’s claims have drawn significant attention from the opposition. Both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal (Secular) [JD(S)] have seized upon the allegations, suggesting that the omission of the request for Vijayanagar Layout land was not a mere clerical error but a deliberate attempt to shield Siddaramaiah’s family interests from scrutiny. They argue that this move was intended to manipulate the outcome in favor of the Chief Minister and his family.
Byrathi Suresh, the Urban Development Minister, has responded to the allegations, dismissing them as unfounded. He explained that the whitener was used merely to correct a typographical error and that the core content and intent of the letter remained unchanged. “It was a typing mistake,” Suresh said, underscoring that there was no malicious intent behind the correction.
In response to the allegations, Home Minister G Parameshwara assured that if the claims of tampering are substantiated, they will be thoroughly investigated. He indicated that the Justice PN Desai judicial commission, established to probe alleged irregularities in MUDA, would be the appropriate body to conduct such an investigation if necessary.
The legal and political ramifications of the case are significant. The high-profile nature of the allegations against Siddaramaiah, a prominent leader in Karnataka, has heightened public and media interest. The controversy not only implicates the Chief Minister in potential legal wrongdoing but also casts a shadow over the integrity of land allotment processes managed by MUDA.
The high court’s decision to grant Siddaramaiah temporary relief reflects the seriousness with which the judicial system is approaching the case. As the case progresses, the scrutiny of Siddaramaiah’s actions and the authenticity of the documents involved will be central to determining the outcome.
As the situation develops, all eyes will be on the court’s proceedings on August 29. The resolution of this case could have far-reaching implications for Siddaramaiah’s political career and for the broader political landscape in Karnataka.
