New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) – The Congress party has intensified its allegations against the central government, accusing it of misusing central agencies like the Directorate of Enforcement (ED), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and the Income Tax (IT) Department to target opposition leaders. This accusation follows Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s claims of an impending ED raid on him, a development the party views as politically motivated.
Rahul Gandhi’s Allegations:
On Friday, Rahul Gandhi claimed that following his critical ‘Chakravtyuh’ speech in Parliament on July 29, the ED is planning a raid on his residence. Gandhi’s speech had sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government’s policies. Gandhi, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), sarcastically welcomed the rumored raid, stating, “Apparently, 2 in 1 didn’t like my Chakravtyuh speech. ED ‘insiders’ tell me a raid is being planned. Waiting with open arms, @dir_ed. Chai and biscuits on me.”
The Congress has rallied around Gandhi’s claims, framing the potential raid as a continuation of the government’s alleged pattern of using central agencies for political harassment. Congress leader Manickam Tagore argued that the BJP-led government has a history of weaponizing these agencies against opposition leaders. “As we all know, the BJP government and Mr. Modi in the first 10 years have misused the agencies, particularly ED, CBI, and IT, to defame opposition leaders,” Tagore said. He described the current government as “weak” and accused it of continuing to misuse power.
Opposition Support:
The allegations have been echoed by other opposition leaders. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi criticized the central agencies for allegedly bowing to government pressure. She accused the government of using agencies like the ED and CBI to suppress dissent and intimidate opposition figures. “When the government gets scared, it puts ED, and CBI forward. We are discussing how this government runs its agendas through these agencies,” Chaturvedi said.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut supported Gandhi’s claims, suggesting that the government’s actions reflect its anxiety over opposition attacks. “Anything can happen. They are conspiring against us from a foreign land. They can attack us and Rahul Gandhi because the government is tensed with opposition attacks,” Raut stated during a press conference.
Congress MP’s Adjournment Motion:
In response to these alleged abuses, Congress MP Manickam Tagore has moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha. The motion condemns the misuse of central agencies for political purposes and calls for respect for democratic norms and the autonomy of these institutions. “The opposition condemns the BJP government’s misuse of agencies like the ED, CBI, and Income Tax for political harassment,” the motion reads. It also highlights the threat such misuse poses to the integrity of democratic institutions.
BJP’s Counterarguments:
In response, BJP leaders have dismissed the Congress’s accusations, suggesting that Gandhi’s fears are rooted in his own legal troubles. BJP MP Naresh Bansal claimed that Gandhi’s concerns about a potential ED raid stem from a sense of guilt. “He knows that he has done something wrong and now he is in fear that he will get exposed. He is already on bail. If he is saying that ED is going to come, then he knows that he has done something wrong,” Bansal said.
BJP MP Kangana Ranaut also weighed in, criticizing Gandhi’s statements as incoherent and damaging to the country. “What should I say about Rahul Gandhi? He makes no sense, at least I don’t get what he says. The most condemnable thing about him is the words he used for the country,” Ranaut remarked. She echoed sentiments expressed by other BJP members, asserting that Gandhi’s criticisms are part of a broader pattern of divisive rhetoric.
The Chakravtyuh Speech:
Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Chakravtyuh’ speech, delivered during the debate on the Union Budget 2024 in the Lok Sabha, was a pointed critique of Prime Minister Modi and his administration. Gandhi accused the Prime Minister of creating a new ‘Chakravyuh’ (a complex military formation) in the 21st century, alleging that it trapped farmers, workers, and youth in economic distress. The speech was seen as a significant escalation in Gandhi’s criticism of the Modi government, and the alleged ED raid is viewed by the Congress as a retaliatory measure.
Looking Ahead:
The controversy over the alleged raid and the accusations of agency misuse have intensified the political climate as the Parliament session continues. The current budget session, which began on July 22, is scheduled to end on August 12, and the opposition’s claims of agency misuse are likely to be a significant point of contention in ongoing debates.
As the situation develops, both the Congress and BJP are expected to continue their public and legal confrontations, with the integrity of central agencies and their role in Indian democracy remaining a key issue.
