ISLAMABAD: On Wednesday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) summoned the disposal of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Zartaj Gul from the no-fly list and contacted for an investigation into the 2022 arrest of ex minister Dr Shireen Mazari in a crime case.
Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani disseminated these charges in their courts.
Justice Jahangiri, while permitting Ms Gul’s plea, claimed “that there was no plausible reason or justification for placing the petitioner’s name on the Passport Control List (PCL).”
“Respondent No. 3 [Director General, Immigration and Passports Control] is directed to remove the name of the petitioner from the PCL within one week,” he claimed.
Orders fresh inquiry into Shireen Mazari’s arrest
According to the court’s description, Ms Gul’s name was shown on the PCL founded on the Punjab Home Department’s submissions due to her concerns in FIRs documented at DG Khan police stations.
Her counsel disputed “that she had already secured bail in these cases and was cooperating with the investigation.”
The judge counted that since Ms Gul had been bestowed bail, she was neither an escaper nor a fugitive but was experiencing lawful proceedings under the regulation. He thereafter requested her name to be extracted from the PCL.
Meanwhile, Justice Kayani affirmed Ms Mazari’s detention unfair and required the Secretary of Establishment and Punjab Home Department to inquire about the officers accountable for her detention.
On May 21, 2022, Ms Mazari was detented, by the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) in a graft case. The then IHC chief justice, Athar Minallah, issued her release in a late-night proceeding and summoned for an investigation into the case.
Empowerment, involving former Lahore High Court judge Abdul Shakoor Parach, former federal secretary Saif Chattha, and ex-inspector general Naeem Khan, executed an investigation, but Justice Kayani found the report inadequate.
He has now composed the Establishment Division and the Home Department to re-inquire the case.
