Israel agreed to an outline in support of ending the Gaza war, a move which has been considered controversial by some quarters within Israel. A permanent ceasefire in Gaza is the goal of the plan recently unveiled by President Joe Biden.
`Involves a three-phase plan, the first of which is a six-week ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from densely populated areas of Gaza. The second phase would involve exchanging Israeli captives and Palestinian prisoners, with a surge in humanitarian aid.
The third phase would establish a permanent ceasefire, enabling the reconstruction of Gaza. However, it is not a good deal according to Netanyahu’s aide, Ophir Falk, but Israel accepts the plan in order to see all hostages set free.
Israel has not shifted ground on her terms for a complete halt to the fighting, which means turning off both Hamas’ military prowess and its ruling apparatus, Falk stressed. He also said the plan was something both Israelis and Palestinians had come up with, which changes and modifications were made by the former state.
Some Israeli politicians have endorsed the plan despite reservations from the Israeli government, among them War Minister Benny Gantz and ultra-Orthodox representatives.
Yair Lapid pledged conditional support from his party should ultranationalist and far-right parties withdraw their support.
The UK and Germany have also backed the plan as part of the global community. Not knowing how Hamas will react, the success of the plan is still in doubt.
Though they view the idea well, they are calling for an assurance of cessation of the Gaza attacks, withdrawal of all foreigners, movement freedom for Palestinians, and reconstruction aid. Despite one million people being forced out of their homes, Gaza has a way to go regarding healthcare with no fuel or supplies.
