On Thursday: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited the residency of Maulana Fazulr Rehman – chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam – to rebuild their relationship. He praised Maulana’s role in protecting Pakistan’s democracy. Along with this, he appreciated Maulana’s religious practices and services.
After the February 2024 general elections, their ties started to deteriorate. Chief Fazulr Rehman had been accusing the government of rigging the election and demanding a new mandate.
On May 2, the chief once again raised this and rejected the general election’s result, citing ‘widespread rigging and irregularities’. He demanded fresh polls as well.
In regards to it, he stated during the public gathering in Karachi that assemblies were “sold” and “Sindh Assembly and President House were also sold,” in the February 2024 elections.
While demanding re-elections he added “The recent elections were fake, and its results are unacceptable,”
He stated the need for fresh polls so that people’s voice is heard and their mandates are respected. To ensure integrity in society.
To mend these ties, the Prime Minister visited the Chief’s residency and suggested the formation of the committee.
