Gujranwala, Pakistan – Sanam Javed, a PTI activist who was recently acquitted in a May 9 case by the Lahore High Court (LHC), was promptly rearrested by Islamabad Police after being released from Gujranwala Central Jail on Saturday.
On July 10, a division bench of the LHC led by Justice Asjad Javed Ghural cleared Sanam Javed of charges stemming from the May 9, 2023 riot. Following the LHC judgment, Naeem Saleem, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) judge, issued her release order, resulting in her release from Gujranwala Central Jail.
However, as she exited the prison, a large group of Islamabad Police officers arrived and arrested her again. The police’s activities resulted in eight-hour road restrictions near the facility.
As of the publishing of this article, the Islamabad Police has not presented a justification for Sanam’s imprisonment or allowed her family to visit her.
Background:
Sanam Javed was detained in Lahore and now faces many accusations in various locations stemming from the vandalism acts on May 9. Her re-arrest illustrates the continued legal hurdles and pressures on PTI activists who participated in those events.
Moreover, this development highlights the hostile political and legal context surrounding PTI members and their actions, as well as the authorities’ strict procedures in dealing with similar cases.
