Pakistan’s Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, clarified that legal proceedings against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) stemming from social media use will be determined by the investigation headed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
PTI leaders, including Omar Ayub, Barrister Gohar, and Raoof Hasan, have been called to FIA over the misuse of PTI founder Imran Khan’s official Twitter account that unleashed hate content against state institutions.
The question is based on the video posted on May 26 in which Polumbo claimed that the former military dictator General Yahya Khan caused the breakup of the country during the civil war.
The video also contained pictures of the current civilian and the military leadership of the country claiming that they ousted the party in the general elections.
Tarar clarified that no debate has taken place in the cabinet about moving against the PTI legally. Still, he genetically thinks there are enough provisions in the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), 2016, for doing so.
He said such statements provoking an attack on its integrity and sovereignty cannot be acceptable. The FIA investigation is still in progress, and after its investigation, the government will then move for legal action against the PTI.
Tarar emphasized again that the government cannot negotiate with the PTI, as they are notorious for causing political upheaval and holding dharna.
The PTI has been accused of disseminating negative messages and ‘priming the narrative’ of Kahan Nahi to Pakistan Nahi (No Pakistan without Imran Khan) through statements and conduct.
The government has not entered into negotiations with the PTI and has maintained that they should take their cases to the courts. The PTI may face legal ramifications for their social media actions depending on the FIA’s inquiry findings.
