The Supreme Court’s recent verdict on reserved seats has drawn attention to 41 MNAs who ran as independents in the February 8 general election. Despite the hard circumstances, the PTI claims that these people are staunch party supporters.
Secretary Raoof Hasan stressed the party’s strategy to keep these people in the fold.
“None of these 41 MNAs will desert the party in this hour of need,” PTI’s Central Information Secretary Raoof Hasan told Dawn.
The Supreme Court’s decision mandates the 41 independents to submit notarized statements within 15 working days confirming their candidacy as PTI representatives. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will then notify the PTI, which must confirm its affiliation within 15 days. This procedure will formally acknowledge these seats as belonging to the PTI under Article 51(5) of the Constitution.
Hasan stated that PTI is contacting legal experts to finalize a plan of action within the 15-day deadline. This plan will have members approach the ECP to authenticate their PTI allegiance. The independents initially ran without a party affiliation due to concerns that their nomination papers might be rejected by returning officials in certain constituencies.
The verdict impacts 39 of the 80 independent candidates classified as PTI members. The remaining 41 members must complete requirements before officially joining the PTI. The list contains:
