UK, June 1, 2024
UK’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced an early general election for July 2, 2024, despite the fact he could have waited until January 2025. In a statement outside 10 Downing Street on Thursday, Sunak said the election would give the British people a chance ‘to determine their destiny’ as the country ‘faces unprecedented challenges.’
This development was unexpected because many believed that Sunak would postpone the poll to the autumn. However, it looks like the Prime Minister has made up his mind to go for the project and unveil his vision for the next term to the electorate.
Sunak’s Conservative Party leads the current government; however, the party is behind the opposition Labour Party in terms of polling, making the upcoming election even more competitive. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has responded by pointing to the word ‘change,’ stressing that people can vote to ‘end the chaos’ and ‘rebuild Britain.’
The Prime Minister will be expecting that a good campaign might record an upset for the Labour Party and the continuation of the 14 years of the Conservatives. However, it is widely regarded as a high-stake strategy, with some in Sunak’s party surprised at the decision to advance the polls from an expected autumn.
