ANKARA: President Tayyip Erdogan claimed Turkey’s steadfast integrity with Lebanon amid rising stress with Israel on Wednesday and summoned regional countries also to defend Beirut.
Cross-border stress between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah has been rising in previous weeks, escalating fears of an all-out Israel-Hezbollah war. Bombarding across Israel’s northern border has resulted in the vacancy of tens of thousands of individuals from regions on both sides of the boundary.
In an address to his AK Party lawmakers in the parliament, Erdogan claimed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arranged to extend the Gaza war to many areas.
“It seems that Israel has now turned its eyes on Lebanon after destroying and burning Gaza. We see Western countries giving Israel support behind the scenes,” Erdogan claimed.
“Netanyahu’s plans to spread the war to the region will lead to a big catastrophe,” he said, counting that the Western license for Israel was “pitiful.”
“Turkey stands with the brotherly people and state of Lebanon. I call on other countries in the region to stand in solidarity with Lebanon,” he stated.
Erdogan’s office claimed late on Wednesday that “ the president spoke by phone with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and repeated the message that Turkey stands by Lebanon” “against Israel’s aggressive policies.”
“President Erdogan said in the call that Israeli aggression must be stopped as soon as possible,” the statement articulated.
At the beginning of this week, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan claimed the Turkish state noticed a chance of the war extending while remarking on the strains between Israel and Hezbollah.
When questioned about Hezbollah’s risk to Cyprus, the EU associate state closest immediacy to Lebanon, Fidan summoned Cyprus to “stay away” from the war.
Turkey included intelligence documentation that represented Cyprus had become a ground for “certain countries'” troops and renaissance aviation over Gaza, Fidan told in an interview with private Haberturk television.
