WASHINGTON: On Sunday, world leaders were shocked to learn that Donald Trump had been wounded in an assassination attempt at an election rally.
Presidents and prime ministers from around the world condemned political violence and offered solidarity with those affected by Saturday’s shooting, which killed one bystander and badly injured two more.
According to the spokeswoman for United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the shooting was an “act of political violence.”
“The Secretary-General strongly condemns this act of political violence. “He sends his best wishes for President Trump’s speedy recovery,” the spokeswoman stated.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that he was “appalled by the shocking scenes” at the gathering.
“Political violence in any form has no place in our societies,” the prime minister declared.
About “these dark hours,” Hungary’s nationalist leader Victor Orban expressed his “thoughts and prayers” to Trump.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated that the shooting “must be strongly condemned by all defenders of democracy and political dialogue.”
Costa Rica’s government condemned the attack and stated that it was monitoring developments on “this unacceptable act.” “As a leader in democracy and peace, we reject all forms of violence,” the president stated.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric condemned the shooting with “unqualified condemnation”. “Violence endangers democracy and undermines our shared existence. “We must all reject it,” Boric declared. President Luis Arce of Bolivia stated, “Despite our deep ideological and political differences, violence, wherever it comes from, must always be rejected by everyone.”
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida condemned political attacks, stating, “We must stand firm against any form of violence that challenges democracy.”
Australia’s Anthony Albanese termed the shooting as “concerning and confronting,” but expressed pleasure that Trump was safe.
“There is no place for violence in the democratic process,” the prime minister declared.
New Zealand’s Prime Minister Chris Luxon agreed, noting that “no country should encounter such political violence.”
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he and his wife Sara “were shocked by the apparent attack on President Trump.”
